Questions
Territorial Units (Stationery)
asked the Under-Secretary of State for War why it is that officers commanding Territorial units have great difficulty in obtaining stationery, while such supplies which are indented for by officers commanding New Army units are received by return?
Indents are passed for issue in the order in which they are received. No preference is given to any branch or portion of the Forces.
Discharge of Soldiers (Medical Unfitness)
asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether numbers of men who have been certified as unfit for military service by travelling medical boards have been awaiting their discharge for some weeks; if so, what is the reason for the delay in giving these discharge certificates; and whether men who have been declared unfit by duly constituted authorities will be discharged forthwith?
As I informed the hon. and gallant Member for Bristol West yesterday, the question of expediting the discharge of soldiers who have no further military value is receiving the close attention of the Army Council. The duty of the travelling medical board is to bring to the notice of the local medical authorities men who in their opinion are unfit for further service, in order that these may be invalided and discharged from the service in the usual way.
Enlistment (Separation Allowance)
asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether it has come to his knowledge that a private fifty-one years old, who enlisted as thirty-nine, went to hospital almost immediately after being recruited, and has been in hospital for eight months, during which time his wife and fourteen children have been drawing separation allowance; and what is the cost to the taxpayer in a case of this description?
If my hon. Friend will furnish me with full particulars of the man's unit, name, and regimental number, I will have inquiries made into the case.
