Irish Canals

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether it is proposed to take over the control of the Irish canals?

My right hon. Friend has asked me to reply to this question. As at present advised, the Board of Trade see no particular reason for taking the action suggested.

National Service (Clerical Work)

asked the Secretary to the Local Government Board whether, under the scheme of National Service, it is intended to utilise middle-aged middle-class men for clerical work in substitution for those men of military age?

This question should have been addressed to my right hon. Friend the Member for the Barnard Castle Division, who has, however, asked me to answer it. Every endeavour will be made to utilise such men in the manner indicated, and in other suitable ways, under the scheme of National Service.
