Commercial And Industrial Policy Committee

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he has received a Report as to the progress and recommendations, if any, of the Commercial and Industrial Policy Committee; how many sittings this Committee has held within the last six months; whether any changes have been made in the personnel of this Committee during this period; what is the annual cost to the State of this Committee, including salaries, rent, rates, taxes, printing, posting, and stationery; and whether this Committee is to be continued?

The Commercial and Industrial Policy Committee held eight meetings in the period from 12th July to its final neeting on 8th November, and has now presented its final Report. No expenditure in connection with it is, therefore, now being incurred.

War Aims Committee

asked the Patronage Secretary to the Treasury if the representatives of the War Aims Committee who are sent down to confer with the local constituency committees are paid by the Committee; and whether the speakers sent by the Committee to the public meetings in the constituencies are paid according to the number of meetings which they address?

Conferences have been held in a number of constituencies at the request of the local committees. They have principally been addressed by voluntary speakers. Some of the speakers who have attended have also spoken at other meetings held on the same day. The lee paid to them is according to the days they are engaged, and not to the number of meetings they address.

Linguistic Survey Of India

asked the Secretary of State for India whether a copy of Vol. IX. of the Linguistic Survey of India, by Sir G. A. Grierson, will be supplied for the House of Commons Library?

The Secretary of State for India does not consider that the series to which this volume belongs is well suited for presentation to the House of Commons Library, regard being had to its great bulk and highly specialised character and to the accessibility of the India Office Library. It has now been arranged that the volume in question will be temporarily placed in the House of Commons Library for inspection by Members.
