Bulls (Registration)
asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he has any information as to what countries besides Ireland have successfully resorted to the registration of all bulls so as to eliminate the inferior ones and if any action on similar lines is being considered?
Legislative action for the purpose mentioned has been taken in the Isle of Man, Western and South Australia, Newfoundland, Tasmania and Italy. The Ministry has no information as to the success of such action, except in the Isle of Man, where the Act is reported to be working smoothly. I have considered the advisability of proceeding on similar lines in this country, but I am not satisfied that there is at present sufficient agricultural support to justify the introduction of the necessary legislation.
Education (Telephone Instruction)
asked the President of the Board of Education if he will consider the desirability of education being given to children in the use of the telephone?
This is a matter for teachers.
India (Malaria, Bombay)
asked the Under-Secretary of State for India the result of the deliberations of the Committee recently appointed by the Government of Bombay to inquire into the causes of malaria?
I was not aware, and think it very unlikely, that the Government of Bombay have recently appointed a Committee to inquire into the causes of malaria.
Unemployment Benefit, Sheffield Area
asked the Minister of Labour the number of applications for extended benefit in the Sheffield area during the last six months; the number granted and refused; and similar figures for the same period a year ago?
During the six months 11th May, 1926, to 15th November, 1926, 57,075 applications for extended benefit were considered by local committees in the Sheffield area, of which 51,693 were recommended for allowance and 5,382 for disallowance. For the six months ended 16th November, 1925, the corresponding figures were 40,272 claims considered, 36,141 recommended for allowance and 4,131 for disallowance.

asked the Minister of Labour the number of ex-service temporary clerks reported to the Joint Substitution Board as being under notice of discharge, and the number of ex-service temporary clerks whose names appear on the register of the Joint Substitution Board?
The number of temporary ex-service clerks on the Clearing Register of the Joint Substitution Board, covering London and the South Eastern Counties, on the 5th November, 1926, was 372, of whom 341 had, so far as the Board were aware, been discharged from temporary employment in Government Departments, while 31 had received either warning or notice of discharge.

Customs And Excise (Overtime)
asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the amount of overtime worked in His Majesty's Customs and Excise Department during the past 12 months by those permanent and temporary grades below the executive grade, together with the total cost involved in respect of overtime payment?
I assume that the hon. Member refers to the permanent and temporary clerical, typing, etc., staff. An exact statement of the amount of overtime worked by these grades cannot be given, but the payments made for overtime worked during the 12 months ended 30th September last amounted to £13,813. The number of persons employed in these grades is approximately 2,300.
