asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware that all eggs from Denmark, Northern Ireland, and the Irish Free State are imported in non-returnable crates; that such crates are not obtainable in England save at prohibitive cost; and, in view of this handicap to English poultry keepers, will he take steps to encourage the cheap production and marketing of these crates?

I am aware that eggs from Denmark, Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State are imported in non-returnable cases and I am satisfied that English makers can supply non-returnable packages in large quantities at prices which, approximate to those paid by packers at any rate in Ireland. I am sending my hon. and gallant Friend a copy of a Report of a Committee which I recently invited to examine this subject, and would add that the prices of English-made non-returnables shown therein have since been somewhat reduced.

asked the Minister of Health whether, when he closes a casual ward, he has notices put up in the neighbouring casual wards and also has notice given to the police of the neighbourhood; and whether these notices indicate that in cases of emergency destitute wayfarers will be admitted to the workhouse?

It is the ordinary practice of Vagrancy Committees to arrange that notice of the closing of a casual ward is posted in neighbouring casual wards, and given to the police. There is no reason why such notice should include the explanation referred to in the last part of the question.

asked the Minister of Health what local authorities have built, or are building, houses by direct labour under the Housing Acts, 1919 to 1924, showing the number of houses for each authority under the appropriate Acts?
