asked the Minister of Health whether he has received any report upon the inadequacy of the accommodation and staffing at the Whitehouse Farm Small-Pox Isolation Hospital, Huddersfield; whether he is satisfied that there is full justification for classifying any large majority of the cases as small-pox cases; whether the local authority or the medical officer of health has recently sought the assistance of, or requested investigation and report by, the Ministry; and whether he has made any recommendation regarding the character of the present outbreak in the Huddersfield area and the necessity of improving and extending the hospital provision?

The answer to the first, third and last parts of the question is in the negative. As regards the second part, the diagnosis of the cases is a matter primarily for the notifying medical practitioner, who can consult the medical officer of health in any doubtful case. The responsibility for the measures necessary to control the outbreak rests with the local authority and their medical officer of health.

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty with reference to the £1,200 in the current Navy Estimates to be recovered from contractors on orders relating to the War period, whether he will give particulars of this sum?

In connection with the repairs and reconditioning of His Majesty's ships and hired vessels carried out by contractors on a net cost basis it was necessary in the first instance to allow provisional rates of establishment charges pending the derivation by Admiralty accountants of the actual rates relating to the period covered by the repairs. In a few instances the actual rates proved to be lower than those provisionally allowed, and the sum of£1,200 is the amount which it is anticipated will be recoverable on this account during 1928.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether any applications for small holdings on the Shiel Estate have been received; and, if so, what action has been taken?

I notified the Electricity Company last month that, after considering the representations that were made at the inquiry to which my hon. and gallant Friend refers, I had decided that I could not agree to the lines in question being placed overhead across the River Thames, but that I should be prepared to agree to them being placed in the bed of the stream.
