Contributory Pensions Act

asked the Minister of Health how many claimants for pension under the Widows', Orphans' and Old Age Contributory Pensions Act have been disqualified since the beginning of the Act's operation by reason of their being over 70 years of age on the appointed day?

I am not clear as to the class of case which the hon. Member has in mind, as there is no provision in the Contributory Pensions Act which makes the attainment of the age of 70 before the appointed day, i.e., 2nd January, 1928, a ground of disqualification for the receipt of a pension.

National Health Insurance (Dental Benefit)

asked the Minister of Health if he has any information to show Whether claims to dental benefit by

insured members on any approved societies have now reached the anticipated maximum or whether such claims still continue on the increase?

General statistics are not available to show the rate at which claims to dental benefit are now being received by approved societies, but I am informed that some at any rate of the larger societies have found the claims during the present year to be fairly steady in number, or even to show some tendency to decline.

Admiralty Establishments (Workpeople)

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty the total number of men employed in the month of May in each of the last three years in each of the dockyards and Admiralty establishments, respectively?

The numbers of workpeople under all Navy Votes, borne on the books of the several home dockyards, at the dates stated, were as follow:

Musical Copyright

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the question of fees for performing rights of musical productions; whether the methods of collecting such fees by persons interested in such performing rights have been brought to his notice; and whether, in view of the uncertainty and doubt raised in the minds of the promoters of small concerts and charity performances, he will institute legislation which will provide a clear warning of their liability to any person performing any such production?

The answer to the first and second parts of the question is in the affirmative. In reply to the third part, I would point out that the Copyright Act, 1911, confers upon the author of a musical work the sole right to authorise its performance in public, and provides that any person who performs that work in public, without the consent of the owner of the copyright, shall be deemed to have infringed the copyright in the work.

Motor Vehicles (Imports, Argentine)

asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) the number and the value of British and United States motor cars, respectively, imported into the Argentine during 1927;

(2) the number and value of British and United States omnibuses and lorries, respectively, imported into the Argentine during 1927?

The official Argentine accounts in which the particulars of imports during 1927, specified in the question, are shown, are not yet available. The numbers of complete motor vehicles and of chassis recorded in the United Kingdom and United States accounts as exported from those countries to the Argentine in 1927 were as follow (motor cycles not being included):

Value.
No.£
From the United Kingdom788286,138
From the United States44,7995,878,000
The exports from the United Kingdom included 177 touring cars valued at £63,489 and 29 commercial vehicles valued at £6,510. The exports from the United States, which are exclusive of electrically driven vehicles, included 34,245 passenger cars and chassis for such cars, valued in all at £4,389,000, and 10,554 motor trucks and omnibuses and chassis for such vehicles, valued in all at £1,489,000. The chassis exported in 1927 from the United Kingdom cannot be assigned to the two classes of motor vehicles distinguished above.
