Professional Ice-Skaters

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that the professional ice-skaters employed at the Thames Riviera, Hampton Court, have been engaged from a country on the Continent; and on what grounds permits have been granted to these people, in view of the number of professional British ice-skaters out of employment?

My right hon. Friend agreed to the admission of these performers for a very limited stay in this country, for the purpose of enabling a demonstration to be given of the possibilities of a species of synthetic ice rink which, I am informed, has not hitherto been in use here.

asked the Minister of Labour the number of juveniles registered as unemployed at Manchester, Ashton, Oldham and Rochdale in June, 1928?

The following table gives the numbers of boys and girls, respectively, aged 14 to 17 years, on the live registers of Employment Exchanges in the areas stated at 18th June, 1928:

Tin Miners

asked the Minister of Labour the number of tin miners registered as unemployed in May and June, 1928?

At 21st May, 1928, the number of insured persons in Great Britain classified as belonging to the lead, tin and copper mining industries recorded as unemployed was 827. I am unable to give separate figures for tin mining, and the figures for June are not yet available.

Quarry Workers

asked the Minister of Labour the number of quarry workers who were registered as unemployed in May and June, 1928, respectively; and the number of unemployed china-clay workers at the same period?

Films (Advisory Board)

asked the President of the Board of Trade what action he proposes to take with regard to the protests he has received against representatives having interests in producing or renting film corporations being allowed to remain members of the advisory board?

I have now received certain representations with regard to this matter, and I am considering them. I am not yet in a position to make a statement on the subject.

Employment Exchanges (New Buildings)

asked the Minister of Labour the number of new Employment Exchanges at present under construction; and particulars of their positions and the cost of the building operations? Great Britain classified as belonging to the quarrying, etc., industries, recorded as unemployed at 21st May, 1928. Figures for June are not yet available.

I have been asked to answer this question on behalf of the First Commissioner of Works. The number of new Employment Exchange buildings at present actually under construction is 15. Their location and the estimated cost of constructional work on each scheme are as follow:
