Radium Compounds

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the total duty collected, since its imposition, on radium compounds; and whether he has any in- formation as to the amount of radium and radium compounds at present in this country.

From 1st October, 1921, to 14th January, 1927, duty was chargeable on the following radium compounds only, viz.:—radium bromide and radium barium chloride. The duty recorded as collected on these substances from 1st January, 1922, to 14th January, 1927, was £6. The figures for 1st October, 1921, to 31st December, 1921, are not available. From 15th January, 1927, duty became chargeable on all radium compounds, and the amount of duty recorded as collected for the period 15th January, 1927, to 14th May. 1928, when the duty was suspended, was £80. As regards the second part of the Question, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given on 24th January last by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Health to Questions on the subject of radium supplies by the hon. and gallant Member for Central Hull (Lieut.-Commander Kenworthy) and the hon. Member for North Tottenham (Mr. R. Morrison). I have no further information on the point.

Ship Repairs And Alterations

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty how much money has been spent in each of His Majesty's dockyards on repairs to ships during the years 1927 and 1928, respectively, stating what items comprise the figures in each case; and how much for similar work has been paid to private firms.

Expenditure on repairs and alterations to His Majesty's ships in His Majesty's Dockyards in the financial year 1927–28 is given in the following statement and is comprised of labour, of materials used and of establishment and incidental expenditure. Payments to contractors for similar work amounted to £232,673. This amount represents payments for "contract work" (Vote 8, Section III, Subheads A. to D. and G.) i.e. for machinery and gun mountings for ships repaired by the Dockyards, and payments under Subhead E. Egg Marketing Scheme

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he can give an estimate of the percentage of English and Welsh eggs produced by poultry farmers as such, by miscellaneous rural producers, and by town dwellers; the percentage of home eggs that pass through the new packing stations; and the percentage of eggs sold by retailers which consumers purchase in bulk, such as in national-marked boxes or cartons, and which they purchase loose?

I regret that I am unable to furnish the estimate asked for in the first part of the question. At this early stage in the development of the Egg Marketing Scheme it is impossible to give any reliable estimate of the quantities of home-produced eggs passing
