Poor Law Relief, Plymouth

asked the Minister of Health the number of persons in receipt of Poor Law relief in the city of Plymouth, specifying the various categories, for the month of June, 1930.

The following statement shows the number of persons in receipt of Poor relief in the City of Plymouth on Saturday, 28th June, 1930:

Institutional Relief (including casuals but excluding lunatics in County and Borough asylums).Domiciliary Relief (excluding persona in receipt of domiciliary medical relief only).

Transport

Public Service Motor Vehicles

asked the Minister of Transport if he has any statistics to show the number of public service meter vehicles owned by municipalities, railway companies, and public and private undertakings, respectively, at the latest available date and at dates 12 and 24 months previously?

The number of public service motor vehicles (including tramcars, trackless trolley vehicles and other motor hackney vehicles with seating capacity exceeding eight persons) for which licences were current at any time during the quarter ended 30th September, 1929, was 63,769. The corresponding numbers in 1928 and 1927 were 60,243 and 56,555 respectively. I am not in a position to divide these figures according to ownership.

London Traffic Dangers (Instruction, Schools)

asked the President of the Board of Education whether, in view of the large number of fatal and other accidents to children in London caused by motor vehicles, he will consider the desirability of arranging for the inclusion of instruction on traffic dangers in the educational curriculum of London schools?

I am advised that thorough arrangements are already in existence in the London schools for instruction in regard to traffic dangers.

Fuel Research Board

asked the Secretary for Mines what grants have been made to His Majesty's Fuel Research Board during the last two years; and what investigations have been carried out and reports published by it?

The amounts expended from the Votes of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research for work supervised by the Fuel Research Board during the financial years 1928–29 and 1929–30 were £77,877 and £84,706 respectively. The estimate for the current financial year is £86,803. The investigations being carried out are described in the annual reports of the Board and of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research as well as in a number of reports dealing with specific results. I am sending the hon. Member a list of the reports published up to date.

The Department of Agriculture for Scotland have issued inquiries to all public and private slaughter-houses in Scotland on this subject. Returns have now been received from 86 per cent. of these, which give the following results:Devonport and Plymouth, respectively, for the month of June, 1930?
