Coal Industry (Hours Of Work)
asked the Prime Minister whether the announce- ment made by the Secretary for Mines at Fauldhouse on 15th March, to the effect that no steps would be taken by the Government to prevent a return to the compulsory seven-hour day in coal mines in June, represents the policy of His Majesty's Government?
The hon. Member's question does not correctly represent what my hon. Friend said, but, in any case, the matter is not one which can be dealt with by question and answer.
Eggs (Price, Publication)
asked the Minister of Agriculture if he will consider publishing the price of eggs daily instead of twice a week as at present?
I regret that the means at the disposal of the Ministry do not permit the adoption of the Noble Lord's suggestion.
British And Foreign Travel
asked the President of the Board of Trade for an estimate of the amount of money spent on foreign travel by British citizens during recent years; and the amount of money spent on travel in Great Britain by foreign visitors?
The available information is insufficient to enable me to give such estimates.
Burrodon And Coxlodge Coal Company, Limited
asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) whether his attention has been called to the delay in winding up the affairs of the Burrodon and Coxlodge Coal Company, Limited; and whether he proposes to take any action to prevent any such delays in cases arising hereafter;(2) whether his attention has been called to the delay in winding up the affairs of the Burrodon and Coxlodge Coal Company, Limited, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, whereby a large number of workmen entitled to Workmen's Compensation out of the assets of the said com- pany have only received an interim payment of 7s. 6d. in the£ made in August, 1930; and whether he will expedite the final distribution of the assets of the company?
I am informed that a receiver and manager was appointed by order of the High Court in November, 1928, and he is, I assume, still in possession. I have no authority to interfere with the administration of the company's affairs by the Receiver, who is subject to the supervision of the Court and not of the Board of Trade. The Receiver has to file his accounts with the Court, and I have no knowledge of the present position. I understand, however, that it is the case that a first dividend of 7s. 6d. in the£ was paid on the Workmen's Compensation claims last August, and that in the late autumn the Receiver was expecting to complete his receivership within three or four months.
Woolwich Arsenal (Discharges)
asked the Minister of Labour how many of the 53 ex-employés of the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, who are 21 years of age and have recently been discharged, and who are registered as unemployed at the Woolwich Exchange, have now obtained employment?
Of the 53 to whom I referred in my reply to the right hon. Member on 4th December, 28 are at present registered at the Woolwich Employment Exchange as unemployed. Of the remainder, seven have been placed in employment by the Exchange, and 18 have found work by their own efforts.
