Unemployment (Building Industry)

asked the Minister of Labour (1) the number of unemployed persons in the building trades in London for the latest date available;(2) the number of insured persons classified as belonging to the building industry recorded as unemployed in Great Britain at the last convenient date?

On 21st March, 1932, the total number of insured persons in the building industry classification recorded as unemployed in Great Britain was 241,706, and in the London Division, 56,643.

Oats And Barley (Feeding, Livestock)

asked the Minister of Agriculture approximately the amount of oats sold off farms in each of the last three years which it is estimated was used for feeding to livestock?

The following table shows the estimated quantity of oats sold off farms in Great Britain in each of the three cereal years 1928–29, 1929–30 and 1930–31. These figures are based on estimates obtained in connection with the census taken in 1925 that 25 per cent. of the total crop in England and Wales, and 40 per cent. in Scotland, are sold off. I am unable to say what proportion of the crop sold off farms is actually used for feeding to livestock, although according to the Report on the Food Supplies of Great Britain prepared in 1929 the bulk of the crop is so used, about 142,000 tons (including imported oats) being diverted to manufacturing purposes.

asked the Minister of Agriculture approximately the amount of barley sold off farms in each of the last three years which it is estimated was used for feeding to live stock other than the barley fed to live stock after having been first used by the brewers or distillers?

The following table shows the estimated quantity of barley sold off farms in Great Britain in each of the three cereal years, 1928–29, 1929–30, and 1930–31. These figures are based on estimates obtained in connection with the census taken in 1925 that 65 per cent. of the total crop in England and Wales, and 78 per cent. in Scotland, are sold off. I am unable to say what proportion of the crop sold off is actually fed to live stock.

Industrial Assurance (Northern Ireland)

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware that an industrial assurance company registered in Great Britain can transact business in Northern Ireland without making the statutory deposit there, whereas a similar company registered in Northern Ireland and having made its statutory deposit there is not permitted to do business in Great Britain; and if he will consider the adoption of mutual arrangements between the two countries?

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. If there is any demand for mutual arrangements, the matter will be considered, but I would point out to the hon. Member that legislation would be necessary.

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the numbers of civil servants transferred from other Government Departments to fill vacancies in the Customs and Excise and in the Revenue Departments, respectively, during the last six months, stating in each case the name of the Department making such transfers and the number of transfers it has made?

Beer Duty

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will consider the question of reduction of the Beer Duty, in view of the hardships that the present tax is inflicting on the revenue of working men's clubs?

I am afraid that I cannot add anything to the reply given to my hon. and gallant Friend in answer to a similar question on 18th February last.
