Trade And Commerce

Russia

asked the President of the Board of Trade the quantity and value of imports of oil into this country from Russia in the years 1913, 1930 and 1931?

The total quantity and declared value of refined petroleum imported into the United Kingdom during the years 1913, 1930 and 1931, and registered as consigned from Russia, were as follow:

Quantity. Declared Value.
Gallons.£
1913 (Russian Empire) 38,290,958 1,027,811
1930(Soviet Union)264,431,0435,491,709
1931(Soviet Union)270,928,7854,099,740

asked the President of the Board of Trade the amount and the nature of the purchases of grain made recently by the Soviet representatives in London?

I have observed in the trade and other papers reports of purchases of wheat by the Soviet Union, but I have no official information as to the amount and nature of any such purchases.

New Industrial Undertakings

asked the President of the Board of Trade, separately, the number of Swiss, German, French and Italian firms which have started manufacturing, or which have intimated that they are likely to start manufacturing in the next six months, in this country since we went off the Gold Standard?

A record, which has been kept since November last, of proposals to set up new undertakings in this country by, or with the assistance of, foreign interests, shows that there have been 26 inquiries from Switzerland, 234 from Germany, 27 from France and eight from Italy, or a total of 295 from the countries referred to by my hon. Friend. Of these 295, production has commenced in 78 cases, of which two are Swiss, 65 German and 11 French. I have no information as to how many of the remaining cases are likely to commence production within the next six months.

Munitions

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many British ships left this country during the month of May, 1932, conveying arms and munitions to Japan and elsewhere; the value of the cargoes; and the ports for which they are destined?

I regret that the detailed information asked for could not be obtained without an undue expenditure of time and labour.

British Broadcasting Corporation

asked the Prime Minister the terms of the Supplemental Charter granted to the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1931; and will he have the Supplemental Charter laid upon the Table of this House?

I have been asked to reply to this question. The only operative clause of the Supplemental Charter in question reads as follows:"Clause 15 of the said Charter shall read as if the following Sub-Clause (v) were inserted therein:

"(v) Provided always that the Corporation may instead of investing in Trustee securities sums set aside to meet depreciation of assets as provided in Sub-Clause (ii) of this Clause apply the same and any Sinking Fund representing accumulated depreciation reserves in expenditure certified by its Auditors to be in the nature of capital expenditure, or in the repayment of any sums borrowed or raised by the Corporation otherwise than for the purpose of obtaining temporary banking accommodation and
