Roads (Damage, Vehicles)

asked the Minister of Transport if his attention has been drawn to statistics published by the American Bureau of Public Roads as to the relative amount of damage done to roads by six-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles; if any tests regarding this subject have been made by his authority in this country; and, if so, will he give the results?

My Department is aware of the information published by the United States Bureau of Public Roads, relating to the tests on wheel impact with four and six-wheeled vehicles. Similar tests have not been made in this country, but apparatus for the measurement of wheel impact is now available and a programme of tests has been entered upon.

Irish Sweepstake Tickets (Seizure)

asked the Home Secretary whether the large quantities of tickets in the Irish Free State hospitals sweepstake, which were recently seized at Liverpool, were seized on his direction; and whether he can make a statement on the present attitude of his Department towards sweepstakes conducted outside this country?

Recent seizures of packets containing tickets relating to the sweepstake mentioned were effected by Customs officers under their statutory powers: in reply to the second part of the question, the sale in this country of tickets in any sweepstake is illegal, and it is the duty of the authorities to take such steps as are open to them to enforce the law.

Farmers (Deeds Of Arrangement And Bankruptcies)

asked the President of the Board of Trade the number of deeds of arrangement and receiving orders which have been made against farmers for the years 1930, 1931 and 1932 in England and Wales?

The numbers of deeds of arrangement executed by farmers in England and Wales in the years 1930 and 1931 and the first 10 months of 1932 were 135, 231 and 232 respectively. The corresponding numbers of bankruptcies were 215, 266 and 250 respectively.

Import Duties (Pure-Block Liquorice Juice)

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether payment of drawback of the general ad valorem duty on pure-block liquorice juice is now authorised in respect of export goods made from this material?

No drawback of the duties chargeable under the Import Duties Act, 1932, has been authorised in the case of exported goods made from pure-block liquorice juice.

Unemployment (Woollen Industry, Stroud)

asked the Minister of Labour the number of cloth workers registered as unemployed at the Stroud Employment Exchange during the first week in July, 1931, and the first week in July, 1932, respectively?

The numbers of insured persons in the woollen and worsted industry classification recorded as unemployed at, the Stroud Employment Exchange were 327 at 22nd June, 1931, and 206 at 27th June, 1932.

India (Constitution)

asked the Secretary of State for India whether it is proposed to co-opt members of the Indian Legislature as supernumerary members of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Indian Constitutional Proposals, with the power to speak though not to vote?
