Russian Bacon (Import)

asked the President of the Board of Trade the quantity and value of bacon imported from the Soviet Union in the first 10 months of 1931 and 1932?

The total imports of bacon into the United Kingdom registered during the first 10 months of 1931 and 1932, as consigned from the Soviet Union amounted to 20,695 cwts., of a declared value of £51,118, and to 37,935 cwts., of a declared value of £78,363, respectively.

Notes.—(i) The total imports of pearled barley consigned from all British countries in 1926 amounted to 1,710 cwts., of a declared value of £1,128.

(ii) Separate particulars of the imports of rolled oats are not available.

Import Duties Advisory Committee(Recommendations)

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the number of recommendations received from the Import Duties Advisory Committee; and the number of such recommendations made without the usual public notice that the subject matter was under their consideration?

Fourteen reports have been received from the Import Duties Advisory Committee, and published. The first, presented in April last, was of a comprehensive nature, and for reasons given in it was prepared without resort to the procedure of advertisement subsequently adopted by the committee.

Oat Products And Pearled Barley(Imports)

asked the President of the Board of Trade the quantity and value imported in 1931 and the first 10 months of 1932 of oatmeal and rolled oats, respectively, from Germany, United States of America, and Canada, and of pearled barley from Germany, the Netherlands, and Canada, and any other British country from which in 1926 we received a considerable supply?

The following table shows the quantity and declared value of the undermentioned products imported into the United Kingdom and registered during the year 1931 and the first 10 months of 1932, as consigned from the countries specified.Most of the subsequent reports have included recommendations relating to a number of classes or descriptions of goods, and of these recommendations the following were made without previous public notice:

  • (1) A recommendation for drawback under Schedule II of the Import Duties Act (report dated 5th August: Cmd. 4157).
  • (2) Two recommendations for the addition to the Free List of rags, partly of wool, not pulled; and molasses used for' certain purposes (reports dated 29th June and 14th September: Cmd. 4127 and 4171 respectively).
  • (3) Recommendations -to adjust certain iron and steel duties (reports dated 27th May and 29th June: Cmd. 4101 and 4117 respectively).
  • (4) A recommendation to adjust the duty on lined strawboard (report dated 5th August: Cmd. 4156).
  • (5) A recommendation to remove the additional duty on Lily of the Valley Crowns (report dated 23rd November: Cmd. 4205).
  • Civil Service Salaries

    asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the number of persons employed in the Civil Service who receive £2 per week or less (salary or wages and bonus); the number receiving less than £4 per week; and the number receiving over £5 per week?
