Unemployment

Liquor And Catering Trades

asked the Minister of Labour the total number of persons insured in 1930, 1931 and 1932, respectively, in the drink industries and also in the hotel and restaurant industries; and the number of such persons returned as unemployed in December, 1930, 1931 and 1932, respectively?

The following statement gives the information desired.in 1929, 667 in 1930, 876 in 1931 and 816 in 1932. The statistics do not give separately the numbers of claimants whose previous employment was in Dundee.

British Woollen Goods (Import Duties, Canada)

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that, notwithstanding the Ottawa Agreements, the present duties on British woollen goods into Canada are now higher than they are for any European foreign country except Spain; and what steps he proposes to take to endeavour to bring about a reduction?

I am aware that the Canadian Customs duties on woollen goods bear heavily on the trade of this country. As regards the second part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to Articles 11 to 13 of the United Kingdom-Canada Trade Agree ment which provide for the review of existing Customs duties. As the hon. Member is aware, the tariff board to which reference is made in Article 12 of the Agreement has now been constituted.
