Cape-Cairo Air Route

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air whether he is in a position to state when the report of Lieutenant G. B. Grylls with regard to the ground organisation of the Cape to Cairo air service is likely to be made available?

Lieutenant Grylls's survey of the ground organisation of the Cape-Cairo air route was primarily undertaken with a view to advising the Tangankiya Administration as to the improvement of aerodromes in that territory and to make recommendations for the allocation of the Beit Trust Grant for the improvement of ground organisation in Rhodesia. Numerous separate reports were made during the course of the survey, and they have not been collated into a single document. On this ground, and in view of the considerable expense which would be involved, my Noble Friend does not contemplate their publication.

Imperial Preference (Palestine)

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware that the omission of Palestine from the benefits of Imperial fiscal preference so far as oranges are concerned is having an adverse repercussion on the prosperity of that British mandated territory; and whether he proposes to take any action in the matter?

The question of granting Imperial Preference to Palestine products has received prolonged and careful consideration, but His Majesty's Government regret that, owing to serious juridical difficulties, it is not possible to grant preference.

The Admiralty were consulted by the Government of the Union of South Africa before the recent reorganisation was determined. The Government of the Union of South Africa makes a small payment towards the maintenance of a staff officer at the Cape for liaison with the Naval Staff in London. The reply to the last part of the question is in the negative.

Unemployment (Transitional Payments)

asked the Minister of Labour how many unemployed persons are at present applicants for transitional payments; and what was the figure in January, 1932?

The number of applicants for transitional payments on the registers of Employment Exchanges in Great Britain at 23rd January, 1933, was 1,174,499. At 25th January, 1932, the number was 906,255.

Area Extension, Chepping Wycombe

asked the Minister of Health whether he has yet decided that the Corporation of Chepping Wycombe made out a prima faciecase for the extension of the borough at the preliminary inquiry held at Aylesbury in September, 1932, and when the detailed inquiry will be held?

I am not yet in a position to announce my decision, but it will be given as soon as practicable. If a prima faciecase is made out, it will then be necessary for me to advertise proposals before a further inquiry is held.

I am sending my hon. and gallant Friend a copy of a telegraphic summary of the Budget statement of the Finance Member of the Government of India.

British Broadcasting Corporation

asked the Postmaster-General when he anticipates that the British Broadcasting Corporation will submit to him the general reports and statements of accounts for 1932; and when he expects to publish them?

The annual report of the British Broadcasting Corporation for the year 1932 has been submitted to my right hon. Friend, and will be presented to Parliament at an early date.

Rhineland (Mrs Tebbitt, Claim)

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is now in a position to state what action, if any, has been taken in the case of Mrs. Tebbitt, who lost her property in the Rhineland during the period of British occupation

I am at present in correspondence regarding the precise figures upon which a claim to compensation on behalf of Mrs. Tebbitt should be based, and any action on my part must necessarily await a reply on this point.
