asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he can state the number of incomes over £5,000 liable to Surtax in the financial year just ended; and the number of incomes over £2,000 liable to Surtax during the same period?

My hon. Friend will find in Table 57 of the recently published 75th Annual Report of the Commissioners of Inland Revenue (Cmd. No. 4196) the latest available information regarding the classification of Surtax incomes in zones of income. The statutory income for the year 1932–33 forms the basis of assessment for the Surtax payable on the 1st of January next and the general assessment of this income will not take place until next autumn.

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he intends to take any measures to enable Jewish refugees from Germany to settle in Palestine in addition to those hitherto announced?

The High Commissioner for Palestine has authorised for the half year commencing 1st April a labour computation schedule for 4,500 men and 1,000 women. In my reply to the right hon. and gallant Member for Newcastle-under-Lyme (Colonel Wedgwood) on the 3rd April (of which I am sending my hon. Friend a copy) I explained the general position in regard to immigration into Palestine.

asked the Minister of Health how many of the persons who developed typhoid fever in the recent Malton outbreak had been inoculated; and whether he will give the dates of inoculation and the date of the appearance of the disease in each case?

I have no complete information on this subject, but at the time of the outbreak I obtained particulars, covering approximately 200 patients, from eight of the nine isolation hospitals in which patients from Malton were treated. Twenty-seven of these patients had been inoculated before admission, but not before contracting the disease. As regards the second part of the question, though the dates of notification and admission to hospital can be ascertained, it is impossible to discover the date of appearance of the first symptoms of the disease in each case.

asked the Minister of Health whether he can supply a statement showing the number of persons who, if they remain unemployed until the end of the present year, will cease to be entitled to medical benefit, and the cost per year of maintaining each such person in medical benefit?

The estimated receipts of local authorities in England and Wales from rates during the year beginning on the 1st April, 1932, amonuted to £146,250,000.

The accounts of the Unemployment Fund for the financial year ended 31st March, 1933, are not yet completed, but the corresponding figure is about £117,870,000. This includes about £54,000,000 in respect of transitional payments and their administration. A count of the number of persons registered as unemployed is made once a month; the following are the figures for each month of the financial year 1932–33:

As I stated in a reply to my hon. Friend the Member for North Tottenham (Mr. Doran) on the 13th April, statistics as to foreigners entering the country are based upon nationality, and no separate figures in respect of Jews are available.

The number of German subjects who entered the United Kingdom during the months of March and April was 7,199. This figure, which is mainly composed of visitors on holiday and of business visitors, is not abnormally high. The number of Germans who entered this country in 1932 averaged 3,400 a month.

asked the Home Secretary if he will state the results of the appeals issued recently by the different chief constables to the public with the object of reducing to the minimum the number of firearms in private ownership?

I am informed by the Commissioner of Police that, as a result of his general appeal issued through the Press and the British Broadcasting Corporation, on the 11th–12th April, to persons holding firearms without lawful authority, 1,452 firearms (including 1,137 pistols and revolvers) had been surrendered up to 30th April in the Metropolitan Police District. The Commissioner also informs me that, in consequence of notices issued by him at an earlier date in connection with the periodical renewal of firearm certificates, the numbers of surrenders of pistols and revolvers by persons who, on consideration, found they had no clear need for their firearms, have been increased by about 300 to 400 above the normal. As regards the position in other police districts, I propose to call for a return from all chief constables which will show the numbers of firearms surrendered up to 31st May next. I would take this opportunity of reminding members of the public that the Commissioner of Police has announced that no action will be taken in the case of any person residing in the Metropolitan Police District who, being in unlawful possession of a firearm, surrenders it at a police station before the 31st May.
