Great Britain And The United States (Conversations)

asked the Prime Minister whether Anglo-American co-operation towards the establishment of security and the improvement of economic conditions in Europe equally extends, or is to be extended, to similar aims in the Far East; and, if not, whether he will consider the desirability of such extension?

Until we know what instructions regarding security the United States Government has given to its representative at Geneva, I can add nothing to what I said in the House of Commons on 9th May. As to economic conditions, that will depend on what is done at the Monetary and Economic Conference.

Germany (International 5½ Per Cent Loan)

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that the German Government has announced its intention of partially repudiating its obligations in respect of the interest payable on 1st June on the International 5½per cent. Loan; and whether, in view of the fact that that loan is secured on the non-postponable annuities payable by Germany under The Hague Agreement of January, 1930, the Government will take all possible steps to protect the interests of the bondholders?

The question of giving effect to the "gold clause" in the case of the sterling issue of the German Government International 5½ per cent. Loan appears to be primarily one of the correct legal interpretation of the General Bond securing the loan, and I do not think that His Majesty's Government is called upon to take any steps in the matter at present.

Land Transactions

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the number of cases in which the Commissioners of Inland Revenue have required further particulars from the persons who have elected or have been deemed to have elected to comply with the requirements of sub-paragraph (c) of paragraph (1) of the Second Schedule to the Finance Act, 1931?

No record has been kept of the number of cases falling within the sub-paragraph referred to, in which further particulars have been required by the Commissioners after presentation of the document. It is, however, clear that if there are any such cases, they can only be very few in number.

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury how many transactions in land have been recorded by the Commissioners of Inland Revenue under Section 28 of the Finance Act, 1931; and, approximately, the number of cases in which the persons concerned have elected to comply with requirements of sub-paragraphs (a), (b), and (c), respectively, of paragraph 1 of the Second Schedule to the Act?

The total number of transactions recorded under the Section referred to up to 30th April last is 651,836. The cases falling under paragraphs (a), (b), and (c), respectively, are 662,318, 76,757, and 12,761.

Electricity Supply (Roxwell, Essex)

asked the Minister of Transport when electricity will be made available to the village of Roxwell, near Chelmsford, by the Central Electricity Board?

The authorised distributors for the village of Roxwell are the County of London Electric Supply Company, Limited. Under the scheme of development for their Essex areas at present being carried out by the company, it is contemplated that it should be possible to give a supply at Roxwell during next year. I understand that the company propose to make a canvass at Roxwell later in the present year.

Prison Service (Promotions)

asked the Home Secretary the percentage number of prison officers promoted to the rank of principal officer; the percentage number of principal officers promoted to Class 2 chief officer; and the percentage number of Class 2 chief officers promoted to Class 1 during the past year to the nearest convenient date?

For the year ended 31st March last the percentages are 3.06, 6.33 and 8.82 respectively.
