London Traffic

Pedestrian Crossings

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that at the public crossing outside St. Martin's-in-the-Fields Church, Trafalgar Square, stationary vehicular traffic is drawn up so as to cover the white lines laid down for the guidance of pedestrians whereby they can no longer cross the road at the appointed place; and whether, in view of the danger involved, he will take steps to restore the pedestrians their former crossing place?

I have not received any complaints of the nature indicated, but I will draw the attention of the Commissioner of Police to my hon. Friend's question.

Light Signals

asked the Home Secretary what instructions have been issued to the Metropolitan Police in connection with their present special attention at traffic-signal lights; and whether, when a vehicle has just passed the white line and the amber light appears, the driver should bring his vehicle to a standstill or proceed across the roadway?

The police engaged in the measures now being taken to secure better compliance with the indications of the signal lights are instructed to pay special attention to cases where drivers approach the signals at an excessive speed or do not conform to the indications of the lights and to warn the offenders or report the cases with a view to consideration of the question of proceedings. The significance of the amber light shown alone is that a vehicle should stop unless, when the light first appears, it cannot safely be stopped before reaching the stop line. If the stop line has been passed before the amber light appears, the vehicle should clear the intersection.
