Private Detective Agencies

asked the Home Secretary whether he will make a, statement with regard to the representations made within the past 12 months to his Department from His Majesty's judges or from other sources commenting adversely upon the working of private detective agencies?

I cannot find that any representations on this subject have at any time been made to the Home Office by His Majesty's judges. The only representations of this kind which I have received during the last 12 months have been made by the British Detectives' Association.

Education (Administration Cost, London)

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education the total cost of administration in respect of elementary education and of higher education, respectively, of the London County Council education committee for each of the five financial years ended 31st March, 1934?

The figures asked for are as follow. In order to be on a comparable basis they are taken from the pre-audit returns.

* The reduction of elementary administration in 1931–32 was mainly due to a reclassification of expenditure.

Shipbuilding Industry (Coastal Motor Vessels)

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is satisfied that sufficient efforts are being made by the shipbuilding industry to produce a type of motor-driven coastal vessel which can compete with similar Dutch vessels operating in our waters, and especially on the east coast?

My hon. Friend need have no doubts as to the competence of the British shipbuilding industry to produce vessels of this type, or any other.
