Iron And Steel Industry

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can now make a statement with regard to the actual progress made in the reorganisation of the iron and steel industry?

The hon. Member will find some recent information in the report of the Import Duties Advisory Committee of 28th February which is published in Command Paper 4851.

asked the Prime Minister whether the effect of the proposed additional import duties on iron and steel on the currency difficulties of Belgium and other gold bloc countries has been considered by the Economic Advisory Council?

No, Sir. The order was made after the recommendations of the Import Duties Advisory Committee had been considered by the departments as required by the Import Duties Act.

War Office (Mechanical Methods)

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office what additional mechanical methods have been introduced into the War Office during the current financial year; and what success has attended experiments made in this direction in out-station establishments?

No additional mechanical methods have been introduced into the War Office itself during the current financial year. At the out-stations the experiments have resulted in mechanical methods having been adopted for store-accounting and contract payments in certain ordnance depots, and for bill-accounting in the Eastern Command pay office. Experiments at other depots and offices are continuing.

Palestine (Jewish Immigrants)

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the number of Jewish immigrants into Palestine and the countries from which they migrated, together with the numbers from each country in each of the years since the date of the Balfour Declaration?

To reproduce these statistics would involve much expense and labour. Tables containing the information which my hon. Friend desires are given each year in the annual report on the Administration of Palestine and Transjordan, which is a Stationery Office publication, and of which copies are available in the Colonial Office library.

Royal Navy (Vaccination)

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what proportion of recruits for the Navy and dockyards during the last 20 years showed any reluctance to vaccination when accepted for service?

I regret that it has not been found possible to provide the information asked for from the records of this Department.

Unemployment Assistance Board (Staff)

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the number of serving Civil Servants, other than S class, transferred to the Department of the Unemployment Assistance Board; the distribution of these vacancies or appointments as between the various

The following statement shows the number of serving Civil Servants (other than S class clerks) transferred to the Unemployment Assistance Board, the various Government Departments from which they were transferred, and the number of cases in which transfer was accompanied by promotion:

The staff of the Unemployment Assistance Board, headquarters and outstations, in post on the 18th March, 1935, numbered 6,264 (excluding cleaners). Details of their allocation, together with the approximate number of applicants for allowances at the same date, are as follow:
