Toukist Traffic (Wales)

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department whether, in the allocation of the Government grant for popularising tourist traffic from abroad, full consideration is given to the claims of Wales as a tourist centre?

The grant to which my hon. Friend refers is made to the Travel and Industrial Development Association of Great Britain and Ireland. So far as Wales is concerned, I understand the association devote to that country its full share of all their activities, whether in the form of booklets, broadcasting, exhibitions or otherwise.

Floods, Litherland

asked the Minister of Health whether his attention has been called to the recent floods at Litherland, where the water inundated the ground floors of a number of houses; and whether it is proposed to take any steps during the current year to deal with the problem of better river

asked the Minister of Health whether classified records have been kept regarding illnesses in nurses at the Birmingham City Infectious

drainage and the prevention of coast erosion in this area?

No, Sir. I am aware of the need for improved drainage in the locality which is in the watershed of the Rimrose Brook, and a scheme for the purpose has been prepared. Action by the local authorities concerned is, however, deferred pending the decision on the Bootle Extension Bill at present before Parliament. I am not aware of any contemplated scheme for the prevention of coast erosion in this area.

Public Health

Vaccines And Sera (Manufacture)

asked the Minister of Health the names of firms that manufacture vaccines and sera for issue to public bodies or the medical profession?

I am sending the hon. Member a list of holders of licences in England and Wales under the Therapeutic Substances Act, 1925, in respect of the importation of these substances or their manufacture for sale.

Birmingham Infectious Diseases Hospital

asked the Minister of Health the number of cases entering the Birmingham City Infectious Diseases Hospital as diphtheria in each of the years 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, and 1934; how many of these were re-diagnosed as some other disease; and how many were re-diagnosed as tonsillitis?

The following is the information furnished by the local authority on this subject:Diseases Hospital; and, if so, for how many years are they available?

According to information which I have received from the local authority, classified records of the illnesses of nurses in the Birmingham City Infectious Diseases Hospital are available for the years 1932 and 1933, and are set out in the Medical Officer of Health's annual reports for those years. Classified records for 1934 are not yet available.

His Majesty's Silver Jubilee (Ex-Service Men)

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether any arrangements are being made or suggested to provide that ex-soldiers who do not belong to any of the associations for ex-service men may have a place on the line of route at the Jubilee celebrations; and whether he can obtain a roll of officers and men who are still living and who were actually on duty at the Coronation in order that these survivors may take some part in the Jubilee celebrations?

No, Sir; if an ex-service man has not joined any of the associations, no special arrangements can be made for him. As regards the second part of the question, no such roll exists at the War Office, and I do not think that it would be possible to obtain one.

Unemployment

Insurance (Agricultural And Non-Manual Workers)

asked the Minister of Labour whether the Government propose to adopt the report of the Unemployment Assistance Board in favour of the extension of unemployment insurance to agricultural labourers; whether the Statistical Commission is now considering the extension of insurance to other branches of the community; and, if so, of what nature?

I presume my hon. Friend refers in both parts of his question to the Unemployment Insurance Statutory Committee set up under the Unemployment Insurance Act, 1934. As regards agriculture, no decision has yet been reached on the Committee's proposals. The Committee are also considering the question of the extension of unemployment insurance to cover non- manual workers remunerated at a rate in excess of £250 a year.

Stepney

asked the Ministerof Labour whether he will report on the present position of employment in the area served by the Stepney Employment Exchange as compared with a year ago?

The best available statistics showing the position of employment in this area are the percentage rates of unemployment among residents in the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney. The numbers of unemployed persons, resident in Stepney, on the registers of Employment Exchanges, expressed as percentages of the estimated numbers aged 16 to 64, insured in the borough, were 11.8 at 25th February, 1935, and 12.0 at 19th February, 1934.

Police

Widows' Pensions

asked the Home Secretary whether he will take steps to alleviate the hardship caused to widows of ex-police officers whose pension on the death of their husbands is so small that they are often worse off than those in receipt of Poor Law assistance?

Representations have been made to me that the pensions payable to the widows of police officers should be increased, and these will be duly considered with other proposed amendments of the Police Pensions Act, 1921. In any case, however, there would be no possibility of legislation at the present time.

Metropolitan Canteens (Contracts)

asked the Home Secretary whether it is by his authority that the creation of a monopoly has been proposed in the supply of bread and confectionery to the Metropolitan Police canteens; and whether facilities can be given for local tradesmen who have supplied these canteens for many years to tender in the usual way?

The commissioner informs me that the contract for this supply was put out to competitive tender by the Canteen Control Board. In the circumstances I cannot see that any question of a monopoly arises.

Agriculture

Imported Flour

asked the Minister of Agriculture how the price at which foreign-milled flour is being sold in this country is affecting the working of the Wheat Act; whether he has any figures to show how much of this imported flour is made from soft wheat; and whether he can give instances of the amount of subsidy paid to foreign growers, millers, or exporters which affects the price at which this flour is sold in this country?

The price of all wheat and flour affects the working of the Wheat Act, and I have no evidence that the price of foreign-milled flour by itself has any special influence in this respect. I understand that flour imported from France, Germany and Italy is largely made from soft native wheat. Such imports amounted to 2,720,000 cwt. in 1934. As regards the last part of the question, I understand that in France the exporter of native wheat (including flour) receives a payment of 75 francs per 100 kilos of native wheat exported.

Milk In Schools Scheme

asked the Minister of Agriculture the total quantity of milk distributed in connection with the scheme for the supply of milk to school children at ½d. per bottle, in the months of January and February, 1935, in England and Scotland, respectively?

According to the latest information available to the Milk Marketing Board for England and Wales, the quantity of milk distributed in England and Wales under the Milk in Schools Scheme was, during January, 2,062,000 gallons and during February, 2,128,000 gallons. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for (Scotland informs me that the Scottish Milk Marketing Board estimate that under their corresponding scheme, 113,000 gallons of milk were supplied during January and 174,000 gallons during February in the area covered by their operations. Figures are not yet available with respect to the area of the North of Scotland Milk Mar- keting Board, and there is no Milk in Schools Scheme in the area of the Aberdeen and District Board.

Monetary Standard

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether in view of the instability of gold as a measure of relative value and the adverse effect of an instable monetary standard on trade, both internal and foreign, he will refrain from taking any steps which would artifically fix the price of gold as expressed in sterling?

I cannot usefully add anything to my statement on the occasion of the debate on the Vote on Account on the 7th of this month.

Portsmouth Dockyard Men (Pensions And Gratuities)

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the number of established men who were superannuated from Portsmouth dockyard on pension, and the number of hired men who were superannuated from Portsmouth dockyard with gratuity, respectively, in each of the last 15 years?
