Arms Traffic (Royal Commission)

asked the Prime Minister whether the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Private Manufacture of and Trading in Arms has, or will have, the assistance of assessors or technical advisers?

There are no assessors or technical advisers at present attached to the Royal Commission. If the Commission desire such assistance, they will no doubt ask for it.

Trade And Commerce

Germany (Exports)

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has been apprised that Dr. Schacht is considering assisting exports from Germany of the products of the heavy industries to an amount of about £83,000,000 per annum; and whether he will take steps to ensure that the vital industries necessary for the security of the country are not jeopardised by imports so subsidized?

I have seen references in the press to proposals of the kind referred to by my hon. and learned Friend. With regard to the second part of the question, I have at present no reason to think that the home market cannot be adequately protected under existing powers.

Steel Works Plant (Foreign Competition)

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the steel makers of Great Britain, notwithstanding the high duty now imposed on foreign steel, are not purchasing British machinery for steel manufacture but buying from foreign sources, which are heavily subsidised by foreign governments, with the intention that the steel-machinery industry in this country may be embarrassed; and, in view of the vital need of such steel-machinery works being maintained in an efficient condition, will he take steps to end purchases of foreign steel-making machinery?

I would refer my hon. and learned Friend to the answer I gave to his question on 14th March.

Broadcasting (Records, Mechanical Pianos)

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will call the attention of the committee of inquiry recently set up to the unfair discrimination by the British Broadcasting Corporation in regularly advertising details of gramophone records when broadcasting, and ignoring similar details of records used on mechanical pianos?

I am informed by the British Broadcasting Corporation that mechanical pianos have been used for broadcasting only on one or two occasions, and that the question of announcing details of the records used did not arise.

Landholders (Scotland)

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the total number of new holders settled on the properties of the Department of Agriculture and on private property, respectively, in each year since 1919; the number of failures among the holders settled in each year; and the percentage of failures to the total number settled in each year?

The information desired under the first head of the question, together with particulars relating to failures among holders on the Department's estates, are provided in the following statement. I regret that I am not in a position to supply similar information relating to tenancies on private estates.
