Education

Denham, Buckinghamshire

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education how many children attend the schools at Denham and New Denham, Buckinghamshire?

The number of children in attendance on the 31st March, 1935, at Denham Council School was 159 and at New Denham Council School was 101.

Dental Treatment

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether he will state the number of school children subject to dental treatment for the year ending 31st December, 1934, or nearest convenient date; and the number who received treatment as a consequence?

During the year which ended on 31st December, 1934, 3,302,838 children in Public Elementary Schools in England and Wales were subjected to dental inspection under arrangements made by Local Education Authorities Of these 2,273,508 children were found to require dental treatment and 1,431,775 children were treated under arrangements made by Local Education Authorities.

Statistics

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether he will give separately for each of the local authorities that have exercised powers under Section 46 of the Education Act, 1921, the total number of children between the ages of 14 and 15 in their respective areas, and the number of such children who are in attendance at secondary schools?

I regret that I am unable to give the total number of children between the ages of 14 and 15 in the areas in question, but for the year ended the 31st March, 1934, the number of pupils aged 14 and under 15 in Public Elementary Schools and in Secondary Schools respectively was:Number of pupils aged 14 and under 15 in

In the case of Chesterfield, which is not an Authority for Higher Education, it is impossible to give the number of children in Secondary Schools, but the number of children aged 14 and under 15 in Public Elementary Schools was 515. Since the 31st March, 1934, five other authorities have exercised their powers under Section 46 of the Education Act, 1921, but comparable statistics are not yet available for these areas.

Trade And Commerce

Canadian Wheat Imports

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether wheat imported from Canada still attracts the preference of two millions and a quarter in the British markets in view of the price-fixing and holding policy adopted by the Canadian Government?

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given on this matter by the President of the Board of Trade on 27th November, of which I am sending him a copy. I am not at present in a position to add to this.

Dominions (Exports And Imports)

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will state the export and import figures for the six months ended 31st March, 1935, or nearest convenient date between this country and Canada, Australia, and New Zealand respectively?

The following table shows the value of merchandise imported into and exported from the United Kingdom and registered during the six months ended 31st March, 1935, as consigned from and to the undermentioned countries.

Palestine (Conviction Of Jew)

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention has been called to the sentence of 7½ years' imprisonment passed on Solomon Jacobson, aged 18, a Jewish national fund watchman, for shooting an Arab trespasser who was stealing stones from the quarry where he was on guard; and will he call for a report and consider revision of the sentence?

I have asked the High Commissioner for Palestine for a report on this case.

Coast Erosion

asked the President of the Board of Trade what grants have been made by the Government to local authorities during the past 10 years for the prevention of coastal erosion?

Certain local authorities, it is understood, obtained grants for work, which included sea defence, from the Unemployment Grants Committee in connection with schemes for the relief of unemployment. In addition grants have been made from the Road Fund where works of coast defence were required specifically for the protection of a road. I would also refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the answer given by my right hon. Friend, the Minister of Agriculture, to the hon. and gallant Member for New Forest and Christchurch (Major Mills) on the 4th April last, as to action taken by his Department under the Land Drainage Act, 1930.

Royal Navy (Stores Purchases)

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he will state the total sum estimated to be spent and percentage of money to be spent in 1935 on the purchase of torpedoes, torpedo stores, mines, paravanes, depth charges, and stores of allied character, also for any such articles required for instructional purposes in the torpedo school, ships, and mining school, from the Ordnance Factory and from private trade, respectively?

The figures are as follow:

Government Departments

Admiralty

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he will state the number of departmental class clerks Grade III employed in his Department on the 1st April, 1935; on the scale with £200 per annum maximum as now consolidated; also the number of Grade III departmental class clerks on the same date with a maximum of £180 per annum as now consolidated?

Civil Service salaries are now consolidated, and the former maximum rates of £180 and £200 have been replaced by consolidated rates of £252 15s. and £277 16s. respectively. 907 Departmental Clerks, Grade III, are on scales rising to the former rate and 53 on scales rising to the latter.

Ministry Of Pensions (Policy)

asked the Minister of Pensions what is the future policy of his Department with regard to the treatment of disabled pensioners; and whether it is intended that the existing hospital organisation will be continued permanently in its present form?

It is the policy of the Ministry of Pensions to continue the existing practice of utilising those hospitals most suited to the interests of ex-service patients for whom the Ministry is responsible. There is no intention of curtailing the special facilities provided by the Ministry except in so far as may prove to be justified by the natural decline in the medical work of the Department.

Scotland (Raasay Estate)

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give particulars of the large mansion house on the island of Raasay owned by the Department of Agriculture; how many rooms are in the house and whether they are furnished; how many acres of land are attached as policies and gardens ground; how long have these subjects been owned by the State; to whom are they now let; what is the total annual gross average receipts from these subjects, including sporting rental; what are the total annual average payments, including wages to gamekeepers, gardeners, rates, and general upkeep; and whether he will consider in future using this mansion house as a hostel, guest-house, or holiday home for sick persons and operated by the approved societies, or otherwise?

Raasay estate including the mansion house was acquired by the Department at Candlemas, 1922. The house contains 45 rooms with domestic offices and is furnished. The gardens and policies extend to about 15½ acres. The house is normally let along with the sporting rights but has not yet been let for the coming season. The average annual gross receipts from lets in recent years amounted to approximately £310. The average annual expenditure on wages, rent and general upkeep has been approximately £390. With regard to the last part of the question, although the house provides the only accommodation on the island for a tenant of the sporting subjects I shall give consideration to any proposals submitted by approved societies for utilising the house in the manner indicated by the hon. Member.

asked the Minister of Health whether the 79 cases of scarlet fever notified in the Eton rural district during the week ending 9th March were cases that actually developed during that week; and, if not, whether he can state the approximate dates on which the illnesses started that were subsequently found to be cases of scarlet fever?

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative, and the second part therefore does not arise.

asked the Minister of Health by what means the medical officer of health for the Eton rural district established the similarity of the germs in the throats of members of the Barrett family and the germs found in the incriminated milk supply?

I am informed that this similarity was established by the application of appropriate bacteriological tests.

asked the Minister of Health whether the order for the removal to hospital of the cattleman at Iver Heath was obtained by the medical officer of health from magistrates sitting in public or privately from one magistrate?

I understand that this order was issued by a single justice.

Local Authorities (Publicity) Act

asked the Minister of Health which local authorities have, up to date, taken advantage of their powers under the Local Authorities (Publicity)

Public Assistance, South Wales

asked the Minister of Health whether he will state the number of persons in receipt of public assistance in Glamorganshire, Monmouthshires and Carmarthenshire in 1920 and 1934, with the aggregate amount of relief granted in each year?

The following statement gives the desired information so fas as it is available:Act to contribute to any organisation established for Advertising the amenities of the British Isles for tourist traffic, and in which cases such contributions are made on this account to the Travel Association of Great Britain and Ireland?

Once an organisation has, under the Local Authorities (Publicity) Act, received my approval local authorities do not have to apply for approval to their contributing to it or to inform me that they are doing so. The information for which my hon. Friend asks in the first part of his question is, therefore, not available in the Ministry, although I understand that more than 250 local authorities are contributing to the Travel and Industrial Development Association. The answer to the second part of his question is that that association is the only organisation which I have so far felt justified in approving for purposes of the Act, and therefore all contributions made by local authorities under the Act must have been made to that association.
