Trade And Commerce
Brazil
asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that British trade with Brazil, especially in respect to our export of coal, is suffering serious reduction; and whether German competition, which is largely replacing our own imports, is in any way specially subsidised?
I am aware that there has been a decline in recent months in exports to Brazil, including exports of coal, and that this decline is to some extent attributable to German competition; but I am not aware of the existence of any subsidy for German exports to Brazil.
Trade Agreements (Coal)
asked the Secretary for Mines what is the latest information available with regard to the extent to which those countries which have under taken under their agreements to purchase a certain quantity or proportion of their coal requirements from Great Britain have fulfilled their obligations under such agreements during 1934 and the first quarter of 1935?
Those countries that have undertaken under the Trade Agreements to purchase a certain quantity or proportion of British coal and have completed their purchases for the first pre scribed period have fulfilled their obligations. For some of the countries the first complete year under the agreement has not yet elapsed.

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he is yet in a position to make any statement with regard to the negotiations which have been taking place with the Australian representatives with regard to the imports of meat into this country
Negotiations with the representatives of the Commonwealth Government and with the representatives of the Governments of the other Dominions concerned and Southern Rhodesia are in active progress, but I am not yet in a position to make a statement regarding them.

I regret that the information desired by the hon. Member is not available.

:asked the President of the Board of Trade the recognised holidays at sea for day workers onboard ship?
:I would refer the hon. Member to pages 33 and 34 of the Year Book for 1935 of the National Maritime Board for the conditions of service of day workers at sea on British ships.
Playing Fields
asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that a gift of land has been made to the Penistone Urban District Council by a local farmer for the purposes of a playing field; and whether he would welcome similar gifts being made to other local authorities?
Yes, Sir. Land for a playing field was offered to the council by Mr. Carnelly and the offer has been accepted: Gifts of this kind seem to my right hon. Friend both timely and generous, and he welcomes them.
Schools (Milk Supply)
asked the Minister of Health how many of the children attending the Denham and New Denham schools were receiving milk at the school during the two weeks ended Saturday, 2nd March, 1935?
I have been asked to reply. I have no figures showing the exact number of children who received milk at the Denham and New Denham Schools during the two weeks ended on 2nd March, 1935, and I am un able to add to the information which I gave the hon. Member on 16th May.
Unemployment (Statistics)
asked the Minister of Labour the aggregate amount of unemployment benefit paid in Glamorganshire, Monmouthshire and Carmarthenshire for each year from 1921 to 1934, respectively?
I have had figures extracted so far as they are available, and am sending them to the hon. Member.
Transport
Traffic Conditions, St Marylebone
asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that the four lodges at the junction of Regent's Park with Park Crescent constitute four dangerously blind corners; and will he take steps to have them removed
In order to improve the traffic conditions at the junction referred to by my hon. and gallant Friend, I have made a grant to the St. Marylebone Metropolitan Borough Council for the erection of light signals. These will be provided at an early date, and should minimise any risks of accidents at the junction. I have, of course, no jurisdiction with regard to the lodges in question.
Special Areas (Road Grants)
asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether it is the practice of the commissioners for special areas to supplement 60 per cent. road grants from the Ministry of Transport for roads in special areas?
No, Sir. I am advised that such supplement is precluded by the terms of the Special Areas(Development and Improvement) Act.
Scotland
Police, Glasgow (Sale Of Tickets)
asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that uniformed members of the Glasgow Police Force of ten enter business premises, and especially licensed premises, offering for sale tickets for football and boxing contests, etc., for the police benevolent fund; and, in view of the objections to this form of pressure, will he call for a report from the Chief Constable as to the advisability of putting a stop to this practice?
From inquiries made it is understood that members of the Glasgow Police Force visit business premises for the purposes referred to in the first part of the question, but that they are forbidden by the Chief Constable to enter licensed premises or premises of known bookmakers for such purposes. As regards the last part of the question, the Chief Constable reports that the expediency of discontinuing the practice is a matter which he is bearing in mind.
House Search, Craigneuk, Wishaw
asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether his attention has been drawn to a police raid on the house of Mr. Meecham, of 59, Wellington Street, Craigneuk, Wishaw, at 2.30 a.m., on 30th December, 1934, without a warrant; whether he is aware that this house was ransacked, persons ordered from their beds, and Mrs. Meecham was left in a state of collapse; that a son of Mr. Meecham was ordered to accompany the police to the business premises of the family, 600yards from the house, and that they ransacked this shop; that nothing was discovered that was wrong; that Mr. and Mrs. Meecham have been householders for 30 years; that not one of the family has ever been in trouble; that in consequence of these visits and searches this business has suffered; and when he intends taking steps to remove the chief constable of this area?
The reply to the first part of the question is in the negative. From inquiries made it is understood that the house and shop referred to were seached at the time and date mentioned. The searches were conducted by an officer of Customs and Excise with the assistance of officers of the Motherwell and Wishaw Burgh police force in pursuance of search warrants issued by a justice of the peace under the Spirits Act, 1880. The inquiries also show that no persons were ordered from their beds, that Mrs. Meecham was not left in a state of collapse, that she and her son went voluntarily from the dwelling house to the business premises, and that no unlawful apparatus or material was discovered in the course of the searches. No information is available as to the precise effect of these searches upon the family business, but the searches were conducted at an hour which would involve a minimum of publicity. As regards the last part of the question, the statutory disciplinary authority in relation to the chief constable is the Motherwell and Wishaw police authority.
