Mercantile Marine (Life Saving Appliances)

China
asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department whether, with a view to finding out the possibilities of greater trade co-operation between this country and Southern China, he will give sympathetic consideration to the possibility of an industrial commission visiting that area under the auspices of his department?
In view of the imminent departure of Sir Frederick Leith Ross for China it is advisable to await his report before considering the question of sending an industrial mission to Canton.
Japanese Competition (Colonies)
asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that the import of light Japanese textiles into Colonies, such as those in Africa, which cannot, under treaty, impose countervailing duties has very largely increased as a result of the establishment of quotas against Japanese goods in those countries which have freedom of action; and whether he is contemplating any steps to protect British trade in the former territories?
I am aware that Japanese competition in textile piece goods is very severe in those parts of the Colonial Empire in which it has not been possible to introduce the quota system, but I am not prepared to say that the increase has been due to the introduction of quotas elsewhere. As regards the second part of the question, various international obligations are involved which are at present under consideration.

Private Mortuaries
asked the Minister of Health whether his department is informed of the number of undertakers' establishments in London that maintain private mortuaries; and whether proper registers are kept of the use of these mortuaries?
The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative, and I have no information as to the keeping of registers concerning the use of the mortuaries referred to.
