Unemployment Insurance (Agricultural Workers)

asked the Minister of Labour whether he can now make a statement as to when agricultural workers will be brought within the benefits of unemployment insurance?

I am afraid I cannot add anything to recent answers to questions on this subject.

District Medical Officer, Accrington

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that the last appointment of a medical officer for the Accrington No. 2 district was not made in accordance with Section 160 of the Public Assistance Order, 1930, which governs the residential qualifications of the district medical officer appointed; and why this was done?

No, Sir. Article 160 of the Public Assistance Order, 1930, empowers the county council in any particular case to depart for special reasons from the requirement that a district medical officer shall reside within the district assigned to him.

Prison Rules (Dietary Tables)

asked the Home Secretary whether he will furnish, for the information of the House, the dietary tables approved by him under Rule 27 of the Prison Rules, 1933?

I am having copies of the current dietary tables placed in the Library, and I am also sending copies to the hon. Member.

Transport

Car Radio

asked the Minister of Transport whether, with a view to encouraging the development of the car radio industry in Great Britain, he will give a definite assurance that there is no intention, so far as his Department is concerned, to introduce any form of control or limitation of car radio?

De-Restricted Roads (Wales)

asked the Minister of Transport what mileage of restricted roads in Wales has been de-restricted as a result of complaints from that area?

The lengths of road which are under consideration for de-restriction are frequently specified only by reference to their termini, and particulars of the exact mileages are not given. The Flintshire County Council are about to make an Order de-restricting 27 lengths of road, and the Colwyn Bay Town Council, two lengths. The watch committee of Cardiff have recommended the city council to de-restrict 16 lengths. I have suggested to the Caernarvonshire County Council that six lengths should be de-restricted, to Denbighshire County Council eight, and to Swansea Town Council eight, but I have not yet received definite replies. A number of other proposals are under examination.

Scotland

Fishery Patrol

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the reasons for the decision to abandon the building of the third fishery cruiser; and whether he will consider the use of a submarine instead of hiring several trawlers to patrol the coast?

I think the first part of the hon. Member's question is based on a misapprehension. Practical difficulties have been experienced in the designing of the third fishery cruiser but it is not intended to abandon its construction. The use of submarines for fishery patrol work presents difficulties in regard to both cost and efficiency for the work, but I am prepared to look into the question further.

Education Authorities (Administrative Expenditure)

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion the administrative expenses of education authorities in Scotland bear to their total expenditure?

Road Accidents (Leicestershire)

asked the Minister of Transport the number of fatal and nonfatal accidents in the city and county of Leicester, respectively, since the speed limit has been in force, and the corresponding figures for the same period before the speed limit came into operation?

The numbers of persons reported as having died or as having been injured during the 17 weeks ended 13th July, 1935, as a result of road accidents in the city and county of Leicester, respectively, and the numbers for the corresponding period of 1934, are as follow:

The latest published report of the accountant of the Department (that is, for the year 1933–34), shows that the annual charge for the administrative expenditure of the 35 education authorities was £379,236, or 3.2 per cent. of the total annual expenditure of £11,931,785. The percentage has been practically the same in each year since 1928. For particular authorities the percentage ranges from 1.9 to 5.7 per cent. during the last seven years.

Rabbits (Cyanide Fumigation)

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether in view of the fact that rabbits have been exterminated on the estate known as the Towyn estate, near Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, by means other than the gin trap, he will make inquiries into the methods used on this estate with a view to the prohibition of the gin trap?

If the hon. Member has in mind the use of cyanide fumigation, I would refer him to my reply on 25th June last to a question by my hon. and gallant Friend dm Member for Hitchin (Sir A. Wilson) in which I stated that, I had obtained a report on this method of extermination, as employed on another estate in Carmarthenshire. I am considering the method in relation to the question of the gin trap, but I am satisfied that further examination of the many factors involved in this problem is essential.
