Housing, Doncaster
asked the Minister of Health whether he will state the number of houses built to sell in Doncaster during 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, and 1935, respectively?
For the years ended 30th September, 1934 and 1935, the numbers of houses erected for sale were 150 and 521 respectively. I regret that information as to the numbers erected for sale in the three previous years is not available.
asked the Minister of Health whether any slum-clearance schemes have been sanctioned in Doncaster; and, if so, how many houses are scheduled for clearance?
Orders have been confirmed for the clearance of 21 areas containing 190 houses. The five-year programme submitted by the Town Council provides for the demolition of a further 227 unfit houses.
Maternity (Anaesthetics)
asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that a method of giving relief to women in their confinements known as gas and air analgesia has been in use for two years with unqualified success in the Liverpool Maternity Hospital and the Wellhouse Hospital, Barnet, and has now been adopted in a large number of hospitals throughout the country; and if he proposes to take any action to ensure that the use of gas and air analgesia will be encouraged in all hospitals under the control of the public health authorities?
I am aware that the method mentioned by my hon. Friend has been in use at the two hospitals referred to, and that favourable results are claimed for it. I understand also that an investigation of this and other methods is being carried out by the British College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists but no findings have yet been published. On my present information, I do not consider that I should be justified in taking any action in this matter, but the use of gas and air analgesia is within the discretion of the responsible Medical Officers of each hospital.
Public Assistance, Southwark
asked the Minister of Health, whether he can state the number of people in the borough of Southwark who were in receipt of public assistance or out-relief, either by way of money or kind, for the 12 months ended to the last convenient date, and the amount paid during that period?
The returns made to my Department relate to Counties and County Boroughs as a whole. I regret, therefore, that the desired figures are not available.
Post-Vaccinal Encephalitis
asked the Minister of Health, what steps are adopted with a view to bringing cases of post-vaccinal encephalitis under the notice of his department?
Notices are published in the medical press requesting medical practitioners to notify my Department of all cases of post-vaccinal encephalitis. Information is also obtained from the returns made by public vaccinators, and by the examination of all death certificates on which any reference is made to vaccination.
