Royal Navy (Artificer Apprentices)
asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what amount of leave is granted to artificer apprentices trained at the Mechanical Trading Establishment at Chatham; and whether any, and, if so, how many, week-end periods of leave are allowed in addition to the usual periods?
Artificer apprentices are granted a fortnight's leave at Christmas, a fortnight's leave at Easter and three weeks' leave in the summer. Apprentices whose homes are in or close to Chatham and those who receive invitations from local friends may be granted week-end leave once a fortnight. Other apprentices are granted week-end leave for half-term on two occasions during the year.
Inland Revenue Department (New Entrants, Pay)
asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will state the reasons leading the official side of the Civil Service National Whitley Council to invoke the principles of Ministerial responsibility to justify executive action being taken in a matter of the remuneration of new entrants to the tax office grade, having regard to the fact that a dispute on pay is clearly appropriate for settlement by the Civil Service Arbitration Tribunal?

National Defence Contribution
asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can give any estimate of the amount of revenue likely to be received from the charge of National Defence Contribution during the present financial year?

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will state the sum payable under the revised charge of National Defence Contribution by companies whose profits, as computed for the purposes of the tax, are 3,000, £4,000, £5,000, £6,000, £8,000, £9,000, £10,000, £11,000, £12,000, and 13,000, respectively?
The tax payable by companies is 5 per cent. on the profits, less an abatement of one-fifth of the sum by which the profits fall short of £12,000, and the tax figures for the profits figures mentioned in the question accordingly are as follow:

Leicester
asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether he will give the number of school children medically examined in the city of Leicester at the most recent convenient date; the number of medical examiners then employed; and the number of children then found to need medical treatment?
During the year ended 31st December, 1936, 12,356 school children in the city of Leicester were examined at routine medical inspections, and 15,882 at special inspections. There were also 26,257 re-inspections. The number of children found at routine medical inspections to require treatment for defects other than defects of nutrition, un-cleanliness and dental diseases, was 1,569. Information is not available to show the number of children found to require treatment at special inspections, but 11,277 defects requiring treatment were found. On 31st December, 1936, six whole-time medical officers were employed by the local education authority in the work of medical inspection and treatment.

On the 31st March, 1937, the number of classes in public elementary schools in the county borough of Leicester with more than 40 pupils on the rolls was 350; the total number of classes was 914.

On the 31st March, 1937, the number of classes in public elementary schools in the city of Lincoln with more than 4o pupils on the rolls was 66; the total number of classes was 208.
