Disease Carriers, London Hospitals
asked the Minister of Health how many carriers have been detained in London hospitals since December last; of what diseases are they said to be carriers; how are these carriers diagnosed; under what legal regulations are they detained in hospital; whether they are isolated or mix with other patients; and who decides how long they are to stay in hospital?
I am informed that carriers are not admitted to the London County Council's infectious diseases hospitals, the only cases admitted being persons suffering from such diseases. Patients who have ceased to show any clinical symptoms or physical signs of

Pigs (Importation From Northern Ireland)
asked the Minister of Agriculture, what effect the dispute between the Northern Ireland Pigs Marketing Board and local curers has had on the importation of pigs from Ulster to this country; and what are the figures for October, 1937 and 1936, and May, 1937, respectively?
disease may however be retained if the medical superintendent considers that they are still in an infective condition. It is customary to separate such convalescents from the acute cases.
No figures are available as to the number of patients so retained since last December or of the diseases from which they had suffered.
Agriculture (State Subsidies And Assistance)
asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what were the amounts paid out of the Wheat Fund in respect of wheat deficiency payments during the cereal years ended 31st July, 1935, 1936 and 1937?
I am glad to have this opportunity of correcting an error that was inadvertently made in the reply given to the hon. Member on 2nd November last. The figures for the Wheat Deficiency Payments for the years ended 31st July, 1935 and 1936, were correctly given in that reply, but the figure for the year ended 31st July, 1937, was £1,340,367, and not as previously stated. The following statement should be substituted for the statement contained in the answer to which reference has been made:
I regret that I am not in a position to estimate the effect which the circumstance referred to has had on the supply of pigs from Northern Ireland to this country. The numbers of pigs brought to England and Wales from Northern Ireland in the months of October, 1937 and 1936, and in May, 1937, were respectively, 5,842, 2,755, and 11,163.
Ministry Of Pensions Office, Ottawa
asked the Minister of Pensions the annual cost of the Ministry of Pensions Office in Ottawa, Canada, and the number of persons employed on the staff?
The total cost of this office for the year 1936–7 was £18,578. The average number of persons employed in that year was 58.
Canada (Naturalisation Statistics)
asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he is aware that certificates of naturalisation were granted during the month of April last in Canada to approximately 3,500 aliens; and whether he can give figures showing the number of British and alien immigrants, respectively, entering Canada for the months from May, 1937, to the latest convenient date?
As regards the first part of the question, I am informed that 2,821 certificates of naturalisation were granted in Canada in April last, and that the total number of persons, including wives and children, naturalised under these certificates was 3,667.
As regards the second part of the question, figures fully classified according to nationality are not yet available. The numbers of British immigrants from overseas and of other immigrants into Canada in each of the months from May to October, 1937, were as follows:

In connection with this table it should be noted that (a) the figures for "other immigrants" include all British subjects who entered Canada otherwise than through the ocean ports; (b) the comparable figures for the year ended 31st March, 1937, were: British immigrants from overseas, 2,264; other immigrants, 9,759; and that the latter figure included 5,113 immigrants from the United States, of whom more than half were of British racial origin and nearly 750 were still British subjects; (c) in addition to the above total of 12,023 immigrants during the year ended 31st March, 1937, more than 5,000 Canadians, all British subjects, returned to Canada.
