Transport (Trunk Road Level Crossings)

asked the Minister of Transport, whether he can now make a statement as to the progress made regarding the schemes to avoid level-crossings on trunk roads?

Actual constructional work is in progress for the elimination of four level crossings on Trunk Roads. The arrangements for dealing with four other cases are in an advanced state of preparation, while in twelve further cases the necessary preparatory work has been commenced.

Agriculture

Wheat And Flour Imports

asked the Minister of Agriculture, the amount of flour and wheat, respectively, imported at present?

I would refer my hon. friend to the Accounts relating to Trade and Navigation of the United Kingdom.

Poultry Industry

asked the Minister of Agriculture, how the volume of poultry production in 1937 compared with that in 1914?

I am grateful to my hon. Friend for giving me this opportunity to correct an error contained in the Tabular Statement given in reply to his question on this subject on 7th March. The figures in question should have read as follow:

Royal Navy (Commissions)

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he will state the ages, on the date of their promotion, of the four sub-lieutenants ex-lower deck commissioned in 1936; the certificates obtained in their various examinations; the accelerated promotion obtained; and the dates they are due for promotion to lieutenant and their ages on that date?

The information asked for in the first two parts of the question is given in the following table:1937, and 1st March, 1938, in respect of those under 18, those between 18 and 50, and those over 50?

Statistics giving the information desired are not available for the dates mentioned. The following table gives for 22nd February, 1937, and 14th February, 1938, the numbers unemployed on the registers of the Wolverhampton and Willenhall Employment Exchanges who were aged under 18 and 18 years and over respectively.

A more detailed analysis by age in respect of persons on the registers aged 18 and over was made on 3rd November,

Seasonal Workers, Glasgow

asked the Minister of Labour the total number of persons defined as seasonal workers who failed to qualify for unemployment benefit in Glasgow for the years 1936 and 1937, respectively?

, pursuant to his reply (OFFICIAL REPORT, 3rd March, 1938; col. 1261, Vol. 332) supplied the following statement:During the year 1936, 175 claims to benefit made at Employment Exchanges in Glasgow were disallowed by Courts of Referees under the Anomalies (Seasonal Workers) Order; the corresponding figure for 1937 was 149. These figures may include some cases in which the claimants concerned resided outside Glasgow. The figures relate to claims disallowed; the number of separate individuals concerned is not available.

Scotland

Sheep Losses

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland, how many sheep have been reported missing or stolen in each of the counties of Scotland during each of the last three years, respectively; what steps are being taken by the State or local authorities to diminish or stop such losses; and if he has any statement to make on the subject?

The numbers of sheep reported to Procurators Fiscal as missing or 1936, and 1st November, 1937, and the available figures are given below.stolen in Scottish Counties during the years 1935, 1936 and 1937 were as follow:

Separate figures for Dumfries and Kirkcudbright are not available.The figures given for Inverness may include a few cases occurring in Argyll.All cases of theft or suspected theft are investigated by the police and I have received no recent representations on the subject, suggesting that other measures should be' taken.

Employment Of Children

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will publish the results of his inquiries of local authorities relative to the employment of children out of school hours and young persons engaged in street trading?

I am considering the question of making inquiries of the kind referred to in the question, but no such inquiries have yet been made of local authorities in Scotland.

Greenock Central Co-Operative Society

asked the Prime Minister whether he has considered the resolution passed unanimously at a meeting on 4th March, 1938, representing 1,800 members of the Greenock Central Co-operative Society, Limited, and sent to him by the honourable and learned Member for Greenock; and what answer he has returned thereto?

I have received a copy of the Resolution to which the hon. and learned Member refers and have acknowledged its receipt.
