Insanitary House

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware of the insanitary and verminous conditions into which many working-class houses have fallen; and will he consult with the Minister of Labour with a view to the release of suitable individuals to increase the numbers of inspectors and issue an order to local authorities instructing them in investigate immediately the circumstances in their low-grade housing areas with a view to eliminating these evils.

:I am aware of the need for improvement of conditions of many working-class houses, and of the present shortage of staff necessary to enable local authorities to carry out their duties of inspection. Steps are being taken to increase the number of inspectors available to the authorities.

Medical Officer (Registration)

asked the Minister of Health if he will take action in the case, details of which have been submitted to him, of a British subject of foreign Allied origin, a major on active service with the R.A.M.C. and a M.D. of Paris University, who is now due for demobilisation, but finds that he cannot practise in France because he is a British subject nor in the British Empire because he has not an English qualification, although he was given a commission in the British Army as a medical specialist and has given distinguished service in that capacity.

I am informed that the medical officer to whom the hon. Member refers has recently been registered in the medical register in pursuance of Defence Regulation 32B.
