National Finance
Dollar Reserves
asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the present amount of dollar reserves held by this country.
It is against the public interest to give this information.
Postwar Credits
asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) when the hon. Member for Everton may expect a reply to his letter dated 30th October, 1945, regarding postwar credit due to the late J. Howey, of Liverpool;(2) when the hon. Member for Everton may expect a reply to his letter dated 30th October, 1945, regarding the postwar credit of Charles Leonard, of Liverpool.
I replied to both letters on 16th November last.
Civil Aerodromes (Rating)
asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will take the necessary steps to give local authorities power to assess for rates aerodromes operated by B.O.A.C.
This matter is under consideration.
Housing Statistics
asked the Minister of Health (1) how many houses were built in Great Britain in each of the years of 1919 and 1920, by private builders and local authorities, separately;(2) how many houses were built in the British Isles and Wales, Monmouthshire and Newport, respectively, during each of the years 1919, 1920 and 1921,
The Ministry of Health Annual Report for 1920–1921 states that the number of houses completed under local authorities' schemes was 1,239 at the end of March, 1920, and 25,878 at the end of March, 1921. Certificates on com- pletion of houses provided by private per sons under the subsidised scheme was nil at the end of March, 1920, and 13,703 at the end of March, 1921. The number provided by private persons without financial assistance during these years is not known. I regret that corresponding figures for Monmouthshire and Newport are not available.
Land Acquisition, Middlesex
asked the Minister of Health if he will give particulars of the land which the Middlesex County Council has bought, or is in negotiation for the purchase of, including the Northwich Park golf course, Wembley; and if he will give the purchase price and the previous rateable value of this land, and state the use it is intended to make of it.
The Middlesex County Council are proceeding with the purchase of approximately 192 acres of land, including the Northwich Park golf course, as a public open space. The purchase price is£188,500 and the previous rateable value in respect of the land occupied by the Golf Club was£540. The remainder is agricultural land not subject to rating.
Experimental Depot, Porton
asked the Minister of Supply and of Aircraft Production if he is aware of the lack of accommodation for civilians employed at Porton, Wiltshire, experimental depot; and what steps are being taken to remedy this.
Yes, Sir; but it is likely that the pressure on accommodation will be eased by reductions in the staff at this establishment during the next few weeks.
Stateless Student (Deportation)
asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will inquire into the case, details of which have been submitted to him, of a Stateless person who came to this country with a Polish passport in 1935 to study at London University and is now threatened with deportation from this country; and what action he proposes to take.
A Deportation Order was made against this man some time ago by one of my predecessors and I have decided after consideration of all the circumstances that the time has now come for its enforcement.
Pensions And Grants
asked the Minister of Pensions if he is satisfied with the procedure followed by his Department in delegating the investigation of alleged immorality by service widows to a male officer, who makes such investigation at the woman's home, in the absence of another woman; and if he will consider the suggestions sent him, over a case put to him by the hon. Member for Edgehill, that such investigations or questions should only be made in the Ministry offices, with a woman present at the interview and a friend, if requested.
It has not previously been represented to me that the -procedure adopted by my Department where inquiries of this kind are necessary is open to objection in the sense indicated by my hon. Friend. I will, however, give careful consideration to the suggestions which the hon. Member has sent to me.
British Army (Personal Cases)
