Civilian Clothing
asked the Secretary of State for War when 5889294 Sergeant Hodges, who was demobilised on 17th January, may expect to receive his demobilisation suit from Branston Depot; and when ha may expect an acknowledgment of letters written to Branston Depot
I regret the delay in supplying a civilian suit to Sergeant Hodges, but I understand that one has now been sent to him. I am aware that there has been some delay in dealing with the large volume of correspondence received at Branston; this has been due to the concentration of all available staff on the despatch of clothing.
Naafi (Released Personnel)
asked the Secretary of State for War if the N.A.A.F.I. Council grants any gratuity and terminal leave to men and women on a scale analogous to the benefits given to men of the Forces and women of the Auxiliary Services on their demobilisation.
The majority of N.A.A.F.I. employees serving overseas are commissioned or enlisted into the Armed Forces as R.A.S.C./E.F.I. or A.T.S./E.F.I. personnel and I understand that N.A.A.F.I. pays War Service gratuities on the normal scale in respect of military service overseas. When released under the release scheme R.A.S.C. / E.F.I. and A. T.S. / E.F. I. personnel receive the normal 56 days' release leave plus any overseas service leave to which they are entitled under N.A.A.F.I. rules, except those who were employed by N.A.A.F.I. before the war and continue in its service as civilians after release.
Educational Corps (Teachers)
asked the Secretary of State for War what is the present strength of the Army Education Corps; and how many of its number are teachers eligible for returning to civil life under Class A.
On 30th April the strength of the Army Educational Corps was 1,844 all ranks. Of this number 764 are classified as teachers before enlistment and are serving on non-Regular engagements. These men will be eligible for release in due course under Class A, provided they do not defer their release voluntarily.
Prisoners Of War (Ex-Wehrmacht Personnel)
asked the Secretary of State for War how many non-German ex-members of the Wehrmacht are still held as prisoners of war or surrendered enemy personnel in Germany; and what are their nationalities.
The numbers of non-German ex-Wehrmacht personnel held in the British Zone of Germany as surrendered enemy personnel are as follow:
| Nationality. | |
| Austrians | 1,846 |

| Turks | 1 |
| Jugoslavs | 157 |

Trade And Commerce
Licensed Trades And Occupations
asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will specify the trades and occupations for the pursuit of which it is necessary to have a licence from a Government Department.
The Board of Trade have no information as to the conditions under which licences are required by the various Government Departments concerned. Perhaps the hon. and gallant Member will put down a Question relating specifically to the Board of Trade. In the meantime, I have called for the information he desires.
Target Making (Paper Board)
asked the Secretary of State for War if he is aware that miniature rifle clubs are still unable to obtain adequate supplies of targets; and if he will take steps to make more targets available.
I have been asked to reply. Appreciable quantities of paperboard have been released for making targets, and I am not aware of the difficulties to which the hon. and gallant Member refers. But I shall be glad to make further inquiry if he will furnish me with details.
Unemployment Benefit Clynnog (Payment)
asked the Minister of Labour if he is aware that unemployed persons in the Clynnog district of Caernarvonshire are obliged to travel to the Penygroes local office each Friday in order to receive their benefit, at a cost of 1s. 10d. omnibus fare; and if he will either arrange for benefit to be paid in the village of Clynnog each Friday, or for benefit to be sent by post to recipients, as already is the case with unemployed persons in the neighbouring village of Trevor.
Yes, Sir; and in consultation with my right hon. Friend the Minister of National Insurance I am arranging for the unemployed persons in the Clynnog district to be paid by post as from the pay week in respect of week ending 8th June.
South Persia Oil Industry (Members' Visit)
asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if, in view of the importance to this country of oil supplies from South Persia, he will make arrangements for a party of Members of Parliament to visit that area to study conditions in the oil industry.
My right hon. Friend is arranging for a party composed of the hon Members for Bolton (Mr. J. Jones), Hulme (Mr. Lee) and Rye (Mr. Cuthbert) to proceed to South Persia in the immediate future to examine and consider labour conditions in the area of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.
National Finance
Polish Faculty Of Law (Oxford)
asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will reconsider the decision to close the Polish Faculty of Law at Oxford University, as 90 per cent. of the men concerned have served for over five years under British command and many are invalided and some crippled, or, as Oxford University has given a pledge to continue the Faculty until next October, if he will postpone the closure until after October.
I have decided that this Faculty can be maintained out of public funds until the end of October of this year, but, to avoid unnecessary disappointment, I think it best to give notice of this closing date now.
Government Subsidies
asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give a list of the subsidies given by His Majesty's Government.
If the right hon. Gentleman is referring to the cost of living subsidies, I would refer him to my reply to the hon. Member for Thirsk and Malton (Mr. Turton) on 15th April, 1946. If he has other subsidies in mind, I should be much obliged if he would define them mote precisely.
European Relief (Us Military Surpluses)
asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he is prepared to grant facilities to charitable organisations, including churches in Great Britain, for sending money to the continent of Europe to enable approved relief agencies to purchase U.S. military stocks in Europe for the benefit of necessitous people.
I have been asked to reply. I understand that all U.S. military surpluses in Europe of bulk essential foods and relief supplies are already appropriated, either by U.N.R.R.A., by European governments, or by the U.S. authorities to supply their own zone in Germany.
