Catering Establishments, Hampshire (Cream)

asked the Minister of Food if he will extend to catering establishments in Hampshire his permission to sell clotted cream under the same conditions as he has laid down for Wiltshire and Dorset-shire, in view of the number of people who take their holidays in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Licences to make and sell clotted cream are issued to farmers on remote and upland hill farms in Somersetshire, Devonshire and Cornwall, not for the benefit of holiday makers but to help these farmers to rear more calves for beef. The cream may be sold by retail and to catering establishments and institutions in the six South Western

Royal Air Force (Disused Sites)

asked the Secretary of State for Air how many families are at present accommodated on disused Royal Air Force sites; how many of these families are likely to be displaced within the next three years as a result of Royal Air Force expansion; and what are the terms of tenure under which these accommodating units are occupied.

Former Royal Air Force sites used for housing are in the charge of local authorities or of other Government Departments, and I am informed that the number of families accommodated on them, and the terms of their tenancies, could not be ascertained without a disproportionate amount of work. Some of these sites were made available for housing on condition that they would be returned to the Air Ministry if they had to be brought into active use by the Royal Air Force, but I am unable to forecast how many sites will in fact be wanted back during the next three years.

Royal Navy

Disused Sites (Civilian Occupation)

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty how many families are at present accommodated on disused naval sites; how many of these families are likely to be displaced within the next three years as a result of naval expansion; and what are the terms of tenure under which these accommodating units are occupied.

234 families are at present housed at four disused naval air stations which are on loan to the Department of Health for Scotland and the Ministry of Local Government and Planning. The terms of tenure are a matter for the local authorities and I understand they may vary from site to site. Present plans for naval expansion over the next three years do not require the use of these sites.

Submarine Exercises (Groundings)

Bennett asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty if he will make a statement on the recent accident involving two of His Majesty's submarines; and what was the reason for the bottoming mentioned in an earlier Admiralty report.

The submarines grounded during exercises to the west of the Hebrides. The sea bed in the area is uneven and it seems that the depth of water is less than that shown on the charts. A fresh survey is to be made by modern echo sounding methods. The exercises precluded the use of the submarines' own echo sounding apparatus and, but for that, it is unlikely that the grounding would have taken place. The submarines suffered only minor damage. They have been docked for examination and are seaworthy.

Housing (Sales To Police)

asked the Minister of Local Government and Planning the terms, including prices, on which a local authority may sell a proportion of its houses to a police authority.

I have no record of any proposed sale of houses by a local authority to a police authority. Any such proposal would be considered on its merits.

Naafi Prices, Korea And Hong Kong

asked the Secretary of State for War if he has considered the representations, a copy of which has been sent to him by the hon. Member for Coventry, South, from soldiers in Korea on the subject of his decision not to issue a local overseas allowance to troops in that theatre; and, in view of these representations and of the strong feeling aroused both in this country and Korea, if he will reconsider that decision.
