Cotton Industry
asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in view of the decision of the United States Government to pay export subsidies on cotton textile manufactured goods, he will consider affording some help to the United Kingdom cotton textile industry to offset the raw cotton price advantage enjoyed by India and some other countries.
It is not the policy of Her Majesty's Government to subsidise raw materials for industry.
Indian Cotton Cloth (Imports)
asked the President of the Board of Trade the yardage of cotton cloth imported into the United Kingdom from India during 1955, and if he will express this as a percentage of the estimated production of cotton cloth in the United Kingdom during the same year.
One hundred and thirty-seven million square yards, equivalent to about 7 per cent. of United Kingdom production of cotton cloth.

Osborne House (Use)
asked the Minister of Works the uses to which Osborne House and its grounds are put.
Osborne House was presented to the nation by King Edward VII as a memorial to Queen Victoria, and its future use was laid down in the Osborne Estate Act, 1902. In accordance with that Act, the greater part of Osborne House is used as a convalescent home, mainly for serving and retired officers of Her Majesty's Forces and for serving established civil servants. The State Apartments, the Swiss Cottage and part of the grounds are open to the public during the summer. Since 1955, by Command of Her Majesty The Queen, the Private Apartments of Queen Victoria have also been open to the public.
