Agriculture, Fisheriesand Food
Exported Cattle (Subsidies)
asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many animals have been exported on which subsidy has been paid; and the cost of this subsidy.
Precise figures are not available, but it is estimated that subsidies may have been paid to British producers on about 30,000 of the cattle exported during the year to end February, 1957, and possibly on a very small number of other fatstock. The maximum cost of these subsidies is estimated at about £800,000.
Veterinary Biological Products
asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is aware that there is a shortage of biologicals and that there is no certainty that further supplies will be available this year when the present stock is exhausted; and if he will give this matter urgent attention to avoid the possibility of increased disease in farm animals.
My right hon. Friend is not aware of any shortage of veterinary biological products in general. If my hon. Friend has any particular product in mind and will let him know he will certainly look into it.
Local Government
Litter
asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what administrative steps are proposed by Her Majesty's Government to deal with the problem of litter.
I believe that the most effective way of reducing litter is to persuade every member of the public that to leave paper and empty cartons and other refuse lying about is a disgustingly offensive thing to do. The Government are therefore, in co-operation with the National Parks Commission and the "Keep Britain Tidy" group, intensifying the campaign to remind people of this fact. Broadcasting, television, posters and other agencies will all be used. Much can be done by the Press who, I know, are already helping; and I ask that the campaign shall receive their vivid and vigorous support. I shall also welcome all suggestions for making the sinners among the general public more co-operative and repentant.

Trade And Commerce
Animals (Exports To France)
asked the President of the Board of Trade how many horses and how many head of cattle were exported alive to France during the months of December, 1956, March and April, 1957, respectively.
Horses and cattle are not separately recorded in the statistics of live animals exported for food. Exports of animals (other than bulls, cows and heifers for breeding and dairy purposes) to France numbered 11,455 in December, 1956, and 5,014 in March, ment of the hospital service and the capital involved per head of the population region by region at the date of take over.
The following table gives in terms of annual expenditure the information asked for in the first part of the Question. Information for the second part is not available.1957: figures for April are not yet available.
National Rededication
asked the Prime Minister whether he will consult the leaders of the Churches with a view to proclaiming a season of solemn national rededication and prayer for Divine direction, favour and help.
This is a matter which I think is best left to the leaders of the Church without the intervention of the Government.
