Cyprus

Airport, Nicosia (Security)

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware of the concern of Service men and others having to use the airport at Nicosia, on account of the fact that some travellers are exempted from the security search of their baggage; if he will give an assurance that all baggage will be subjected to the security search in future; and what reply he has given to the statement submitted to him by the hon. Member for Liverpool, Exchange, on the recent explosion at Nicosia Airport.

I am making inquiries and will write to the hon. Member when I have heard from the Governor.

Local Government

Derbyshire Development Plan

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs on what date he expects to give his approval of the Derbyshire Development Plan.

Though there is still some detailed work to be done on maps, my right hon. Friend hopes that it will be possible to approve the plan next month.

Employment

Hull

asked the Minister of Labour the total number of unemployed in Hull, and the number of unemployed men and women, respectively, in October, 1951, and October, 1958; what are the major causes of the increase; and what steps the Government intend to take forthwith to reduce unemployment in the city.

On 13th October, 1958, there were 5.650 registered unemployed, including 4,314 men and 1,124 women at the Hull and Hessle Employment Exchanges compared with 3,226 including 2,247 men and 979 women in October, 1951. The increase has been caused by a general slackening of activity in the city, particularly in the port. during the past year. My officers are doing all they can by submitting unemployed persons to vacancies notified to them.

Coloured People

asked the Minister of Labour the number of coloured people, of working age, at present in employment in the United Kingdom; and how many of these are unemployed and in receipt of unemployment benefit.

The information asked for in the first part of the hon. Member's question is not available. A count of unemployed Commonwealth Asian, African and West Indian workers registering at Employment Exchanges in Great Britain during the week beginning 28th July, last gave an estimated figure of 17,100. Of this total, just under 7,000 were in receipt of unemployment benefit.

Pensions And National Insurance

Retirement Pensions

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance how many claims for retirement pension have been accepted by his Department in respect of late-age entrants who qualified for consideration as from 5th July, 1958.

About 415,000, including about 115,000 pensions awarded to wives on the husband's insurance.

Scotland

Mobile Shops

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what representations he has received regarding mobile shops operating on local authority housing schemes and in new towns where adequate shopping facilities already exist; and what action he proposes to take.

I have recently received joint representations on this matter from the East Kilbride Trades Association and the Scottish Council of Tenants. On the information at present before me I am not satisfied that action on my part is deeded, but I have offered these bodies an opportunity to supplement their written representations.
