Agriculture, Fisheries And Food

Crop Protection Products

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, if he will consider putting crop protection products on a similar basis to that now existing for fertilisers under the Feeding Stuffs Acts.

My right hon. Friend is not at present satisfied that it is necessary for him to seek powers to introduce legislation for this purpose. The voluntary Crop Protection Products Approval Scheme run by my Ministry and the Department of Agriculture for Scotland provides farmers with a list of officially approved crop protection products, classified according to the active chemical ingredients.

Horticultural Grants

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) if, when looking at the subject of horticultural grants, he will give consideration to seeing what help he can give to improving glasshouse heating, in view of its importance at the present time;(2) if he will consider allocating a certain portion of the horticultural grants for the grubbing up of old orchards when determining the administration of such grants.

My right hon. Friend will bear these suggestions in mind, together with all others that are made regarding the scheme for horticultural grants.

Education

Committee On Education And Commerce (Report)

asked the Minister of Education whether he is now able to announce his conclusions on the recent Report of the Special Advisory Committee on Education and Commerce.

Yes. I have now considered this important and practical Report and have today sent out a circular warmly commending it to local education authorities, on whom will fall the task of implementing many of its recommendations. For my part, I shall do all I can, in co-operation with the other interests concerned, to make its recommendations effective, and I have already told authorities that I shall give special priority to building projects for commercial education as part of the new three-year plan for Further Education building announced in Circular 1/59 of 13th April.

Trade And Commerce

Horticultural Products

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will again consider revising tariffs on certain horticultural products as suggested by the National Farmers' Union, as the present situation is not working out equitably for the growers concentrating on horticultural products.

I have nothing to add to the reply given to my hon. Friend on 26th March in which my hon. Friend the Minister of State said that it would be for the horticultural interests concerned to judge when they had sufficient evidence to justify the submission of fresh applications.

Ministry Of Health

Sight Tests, Manchester

asked the Minister of Health whether he will state the number of sight tests carried out in the city of Manchester under the supplementary ophthalmic service for each of the last five months.

The figures for the first five months of 1959 are:

January7,061
February7,698
March8,084
April8,693
May6,382 (provisional)

Telephone Service

Directories

asked the Postmaster-General if he will have the names of the telephone areas printed on the spines of the stiff-covered volumes of telephone directories in larger type so that they can be read more easily.

I thank my hon. Friend for drawing attention to this point. We will certainly see what can be done to improve the printing of these names.
