Home Department
Suspended Sentences
asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will introduce legislation to enable courts to impose a suspended sentence in cases where the convicted person has been placed on probation, in the event of there being a breach of the probation order, the suspended sentence to be subject to confirmation by the appropriate court.
I would refer the hon. and learned Member to the Answer which I gave on 28th April to Questions by the hon. Member for Oxford (Mr. Woodhouse).
National Finance
Civil Servants (Unestablished Service)
asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he expects to meet representatives of the Civil Service Staff Associations to discuss superannuation rights for unestablished service prior to 1949.
I have nothing to add to my reply to the hon. Member for Bromsgrove (Mr. Dance) on 6th April.
Civil Servants (Pensions)
asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will bring up to date the information given on 19th January, 1965, by setting out the maximum pensions of the civil servants referred to in each year from 1949 to 1965 by giving the same figures for those who retired on 31st March, 1965.
The corresponding maximum pensions for those who retired on 31st March, 1965, are:

Questions To Ministers
asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will take the necessary steps to discover the estimated cost per Question of processing, respectively, Written and Oral Questions from hon. Members of this House during a month in the near future; and whether he will circulate the reply in the OFFICIAL REPORT with details of significant cost elements and references to any Ministries which differ markedly from the norm.
Yes, as regards work done in Government Departments.
Overseas Development
High Commission Territories (Economic And Technical Assistance)
asked the Minister of Overseas Development what steps have been taken to seek addition economic and technical assistance from the United Nations for Basutoland, the Bechuanaland Protectorate and Swaziland.
Her Majesty's Government are co-operating with the Secretary General in an investigation to determine the scope for additional economic and technical assistance for these three territories. A team comprising two persons nominated by the Secretary General and one person nominated by Her Majesty's Government will be visiting the territories later this month for this purpose. The Mission's report will be made to Her Majesty's Government. Copies of it will simultaneously be available to the Secretary General and to the Governments of the three territories. Her Majesty's Government are bearing the costs of the visit.
Wireless And Television
Television Reception, Dumfriesshire
asked the Postmaster-General what steps he is taking to enable television viewers in Dumfriesshire to see the British Broadcasting Corporation Scottish programme.
The extension of the coverage attained by its services is primarily a matter for the B.B.C. The Corporation tells me that it expects to bring a new Band III transmitter into service at its existing station at Sandale later this summer. This will enable the B.B.C.'s Scottish Service to be received by viewers in the greater part of Dumfriesshire.
Board Of Trade
Travel Agents
asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will expedite legislation to give protection to holidaymakers who may suffer as a result of the financial failure of travel agents.
I would refer my hon. Friend to the Answer given to him on 17th February.
Railways
Trespassing (Penalties)
asked the Minister of Transport if he will seek to increase the penalties for trespassing on the railways; and whether he will make a statement.
I am fully aware of the importance of discouraging trespassing on the railways. On the question of penalties, I would refer the hon. Member to the Answer I gave to the hon. Member for Surbiton (Mr. Fisher) on 28th April.
Transport
Medical Practitioners (Radio Telephones)
asked the Minister of Transport whether he will exclude medical practitioners from any order prohibiting the use of radio telephones by drivers of vehicles on the move.
I am considering representations made by the British Medical Association and other organisations on various aspects of the draft Regulation and cannot say at this stage what my decision will be. I did, however, take into account the needs of medical practitioners and similar users in drafting the Regulation and I think that they will find in practice that it is not unreasonable. The driver will know when he is being called and will be able to respond as soon as he can stop in safety. If traffic conditions are such that he cannot do so it is most unlikely that he could carry on a telephone conversation with safety.
British Road Services Depots
asked the Minister of Transport how many depots are in present use by British Road Services; what is the number in each region; and how many are proposed to be closed, in Great Britain and in each region, respectively.
The Transport Holding Company estimates that the road haulage companies at present owned or controlled by it use some 500 depôts from which services start or finish or from which collection and delivery services are operated. No regional analysis is readily available. Changes are made as necessary to cope with differing types of traffic, traffic streams, seasonal and other fluctuations, and other factors. It is not therefore possible to say how many depôts will be opened or closed in the future.
Roads
Road Junction, Gravesend (Traffic Signals)
asked the Minister of Transport whether the traffic signals at the Tollgate junction of the A.2 and A.227, in the constituency of Gravesend, are intended to be permanent.
No. A flyover is being provided.
Shipping
Portbury Project (Report)
asked the Minister of Transport whether he has yet received the report of the National Ports Council on the Portbury project; and when he will announce his decision.
I hope to receive this report within the next few weeks.
