Women In Developing Countries
asked Her Majesty's Government:In the light of the detailed ODA policies and practice as regards Women in Development set out in RD(S)201/217/01, what initiatives specifically designed to help women in developing countries have been followed up by ODA since 1979; how many of these initiatives relate to family planning, and how many to other projects; to which countries do they relate; and what is the estimated expenditure on each project.
Since 1979 ODA has sought to apply its policies on Women in Development both by taking more account of implications for women in all its activities, and by supporting projects specifically designed to help women, notably in mother and child health, family planning, education and agriculture, through the bilateral aid programme, through joint funding with voluntary agencies, and through contributions to international agencies active in this field. I am sending the noble Lord details.
Small Firms: Turnover Limits
asked Her Majesty's Government:Whether they will update the turnover limits used to define a small firm in Cmnd. 7503 (page 43) to take account of current prices; andWhether they will update the statistical table on small firms printed in Department of Industry evidence to the Select Committee on Unemployment (H.L. 1979–80, 144-x, page 7) to the most recent date conveniently available.
It is our intention to explore the possibilities of updating the table when the results from the 1981 Annual Census of Employment are available. The table was intended to give an approximate measure of the overall size of the small firms sector and, in view of the statistical uncertainties involved, updating at five-yearly intervals would seem to be appropriate. The up-dated turnover limits (as at April 1981) are:
- Retailing—turnover £270,000 p.a. or less.
- Wholesale Trades—turnover £1,080,000 p.a. or less.
- Motor Trades—turnover £540,000 p.a. or less.
- Miscellaneous services—turnover £270,000 p.a. or less.
Dolphins And Porpoises: By-Catch Restrictions
asked Her Majesty's Government:Whether they will introduce legislation designed to prevent the incidental killing of dolphin and porpoises by the Tuna Fishing Industry along the lines of the legislation now in force in the United States of America; andWhether they or the Governments concerned intend to set a quota on the by-catch of dolphins and porpoises for the Tuna Fishing Industry based in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands along the lines of the quota imposed by the United States Government on their Tuna Fishing Industry.
Her Majesty's Government will soon be consulting the Governments of our dependent territories about extending to their territories the prohibition on the taking of dolphins and porpoises provided for in Clause 35 of the Fisheries Bill; in doing so, we shall have in mind the need to restrict incidental killing of marine mammals in the course of fishing for tuna.House adjourned at eleven minutes before one o'clock.
