Race Relations: Proposals

asked Her Majesty's Government:What proposals were made to them by the Standing Conference of Afro-Caribbean and Asian Councillors to avoid further racial strife, and what response has been made to them.

The Standing Conference of Afro-Caribbean and Asian Councillors have put to my right honourable friend the Home Secretary a number of proposals for action on matters of concern to the ethnic minority communities. They include police/ community relations, urban deprivation, unemployment, education and public information. My right honourable friend met members of the Standing Conference on 24th June and undertook to consider, with his ministerial colleagues, the points they had raised.

The National Library: Building Progress

asked Her Majesty's Government:What progress is being made with the building of the National Library at St. Pancras; and what is the anticipated completion date.

Preliminary work for the first sub-stage of the building is now in hand, and work on the site is expected to begin early in 1982. It is intended that the accommodation will come into use by the end of the decade. No decisions have yet been taken on subsequent stages of the project.House adjourned at ten minutes before eleven o'clock.
