Northern Ireland: Police And Public Liaison Committees
asked Her Majesty's Government:Whether they will list the public and police liaison committees (whether formally or informally constituted) which are currently functioning in Northern Ireland; and whether any such committes have ceased to function, and if so, why.
Police and public liaison committees in Northern Ireland take the forms either of local security committees or of police liaison committees. Representatives from almost all local authorities in Northern Ireland attend one or both. The exceptions are Newry and Mourne District Council and Omagh District Council, neither of whom have sought meetings recently.
The Abortion Act: Contravention Statistics
asked Her Majesty's Government:How many persons have been convicted for contravention of the Abortion Act 1967 since it became law.
Annual information on the number of persons found guilty of procuring an illegal abortion is published in Criminal Statistics, England and Wales (offence classification 14 in Table S4.1(A) of the supplementary tables Volume 2, 1981). The total number in the period 27th April 1968 to 31st December 1981 was 247. Over the same period the corresponding number of persons cautioned was 124, making a total number of persons found guilty or cautioned of 371. Information on persons found guilty or cautioned is published annually in Criminal Statistics, England and Wales—Table 5.9 of the volume for 1981 (Cmnd. 8668).
Arab/Israeli Dispute: Meetings With Foreign Representatives
asked Her Majesty's Government:What conditions they made about accepting a Palestinian representative in the Arab League delegation that was due in the United Kingdom on 26th November to discuss the Arab-Israeli dispute, and in what respects and why these differed from the conditions they make about meetings at the highest level with members of the Israeli Government.
Our policy on contacts with the PLO is well-known and was set out most recently by my right honourable friend the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary in answer to questions in another place on 24th November. We do not impose conditions for meetings with members of the Israeli Government; there have been no recent meetings with the Israeli Government at the highest level, and none are planned at present.
