Exercise Brave Defender
asked Her Majesty's Government:Whether they will make a Statement on the conclusions of Exercise Brave Defender.
The exercise successfully tested plans and procedures for the ground defence of vital installations in this country. I should like, in particular, to pay tribute to the enthusiasm and professionalism of the volunteer and reserve forces who took part. A detailed analysis of Brave Defender is now under way but I have today placed in the Library a report on first impressions of the exercise.
St Thomas' Hospital Proposed Financial Cuts
asked Her Majesty's Government:Whether they will reconsider the proposed financial cuts on St. Thomas' Hospital; and whether they will confirm they will not remove the hospital's health authority representation over this issue.
Resource allocation to West Lambeth Health Authority is a matter for South East Thames Regional Health Authority. I understand that West Lambeth Health Authority has now agreed a strategic plan which is acceptable to the regional health authority.
Camberwell Resettlement Unit: Effects Of Closure
asked Her Majesty's Government:How much accommodation for homeless men will be lost as a result of the closure of the Camberwell Resettlement Unit; what alternative provision with specialist help available is to be set up; and at what saving in cost.
The Camberwell Resettlement Unit was providing 300 staffed bedspaces for homeless men, and the scheme to replace it will provide 963 staffed bedspaces in hostels run mainly by voluntary organisations. There will be no savings as the cost of the alternative provision will exceed the cost of running the Camberwell Resettlement Unit.
Arts Council Support
asked Her Majesty's Government:Whether they have read the Arts Council's prospectus and will increase its grant as requested.
The Government have already stated their commitment to maintaining the level of arts support, and have promised £34 million of additional central funding in 1986–87 to compensate for the abolition of the GLC and metropolitan country councils. My honourable friend the Minister for the Arts has also read the Arts Council's recent prospectus and will take all the arguments into account in determining the Council's share of the overall arts programme.
