Sports: Databases

Volume 470: debated on Monday 21 January 2008

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what the total cost to public funds was of the Active Places database in each year for which figures are available. (178943)

The initial costs for Active Places for the first three years between 2004 and 2007 was £5.2 million. The budget for the current financial year 2007-08 is £1.1 million which is spent on data maintenance, data acquisition, systems development and hosting.

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what estimate he has made of the percentage of all UK sports facilities that are currently on the Active Places database; and if he will make a statement. (178944)

Unfortunately it is not possible to estimate the percentage of UK sports facilities on Active Places, as it is only applicable to England. The database currently holds information on 11 sport facility types. Sport England estimates that over 80 per cent. of formal sport in England takes places on these types of facilities and that Active Places database includes over 90 per cent. of these facilities. The Sports Council for Northern Ireland has developed its own version of Active Places and the Sports Council for Wales is currently developing a version as well.
