Developing Countries: Food

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development pursuant to the Oral Answer of 30 April 2008, Official Report, column 286, what recent assessment he has made of the contribution of market speculation to the effects on developing countries of the increase in world food prices. (209766)

The Government have been examining the contribution of market speculation to recent rises in commodity prices, including food. The available evidence suggests that speculation in financial markets is not driving prices. The Chancellor will place further details before the House today.
