Volume 496: debated on Thursday 16 July 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what estimate he has made of the growth rate that would need to be sustained in sub-Saharan Africa if that region is to meet the Millennium Development goals by 2015. (285394)

Developing countries need sustained economic growth to meet many of the millennium development goals, but growth has a particularly important part to play in helping to achieve the MDG 1 targets, which are: to halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportions of people who live on less than a dollar a day and who suffer from hunger. Economic growth rates of at least 6 per cent. would need to be sustained in order to do this.
